AVATAR 3D

I’m not going to bother with reviewing/defending the film. We’ve been over that. What I can tell you is that the 3D image on this disc is astonishing.

THE FUNHOUSE

Tobe Hooper’s Dark Ride chiller comes to Blu thanks to SHOUT/SCREAM Factory – who are, now as ever, doing stellar work. Terror Train also debuts today, and while I posted the Amazon links for both, purchasing them directly from SCREAM! gets you posters featuring the new art commissioned by the company.

MOONRISE KINGDOM

Wes Anderson’s latest collaboration with the heroic Roman Coppola is a boy’s adventure tale concerning the manhunt for a pair of adolescent runaways. It’s beautiful and sad and funny and the performances are amazing. Essentially everything you’d expect from Anderson. I understand that mileage may vary there, but I also understand that people are wrong everyday.

One of those weeks when I just didn’t have time for a proper preview of anything, but when has that stopped me having an opinion?

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT – COME HOME TO MAMA

BUY IT FROM AMAZON!

Since Dad and Big Bro have already dropped two of 2012’s best albums, no reason Li’l Sis shouldn’t get in the game. I only had time for one quick, distracted, listen, but this feels typically intelligent and forthright; it also feels atypically catchy.

GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR – ALLELUJAH! DON’T BEND! ASCEND!

Back by popular demand, still busier than you. And, no, those aren’t bagpipes. Average track length: 13:17.

HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS – SUNDAY RUN ME OVER

Jack White’s a helluva guitar player, but this woman has his deadpan country-blues snark beat six ways from Sunday.

007: LEGENDS (PS3, 360)

Why is every Bond game an FPS? The character doesn’t typically run around shooting hundreds of guys. And even if he did, that’s not why he’s an interesting character. Goldeneye was what it was to people, but the game wasn’t exactly the best representation of what makes Bond Bond. 007: Legends is another rush job CoD clone. At least this time they butcher some classic Bond along with the current.

DANCE CENTRAL 3 (360)

Dance Central 2 was the only Kinect game I’ve played that works. I’m also out of shape and have all the rhythm of Danny DeVito on Special K. But if you can actually move your body without fear of death,  and you own a Kinect, Dance Central is a must.

DOOM 3: BFG EDITION (PC,PS3,360)

Doom 3 was okay in 2004. It had cool lighting and tons of monster closets. In 2012, the game is loose and dated. But it still has cool lighting and tons of monster closets and added brand spanking new 3D – which probably looks great when tons of demons are throwing tons of crap directly at your face.

So you’re safe again for another week. Enjoy it while it lasts…

FIN.
