The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man hit theaters in 3D this year, with the latter actually filmed in the format. Marvel’s prepping post-conversion for Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World for their releases next year. Certainly, a majority of superhero movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Spidey sequel, and The Avengers 2 will have some kind of spiffy, three-dimensional dressing to it. All the cool kids are doing it, so why not Superman?
Direct from Warner Bros., Man of Steel will be arriving on June 14, 2013 with 2D, 3D and IMAX choices available to moviegoers. Here’s director Zack Snyder on the announcement:
The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX. Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man of Steel to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience. We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.
I say, why not? Freedom of choice for us, and the chance at a bigger box office for the studio. Mostly, I lean towards the traditional side and tend to save more niche genre offerings to see in the format (Drive Angry and Dredd among them) or catch the ones where the process is essential to development (like Avatar). Even with the advent of the format, it’s refreshing that the option for a more classic experience still remains. Those of you hoping for Michael Shannon crazy eyes in a more lifelike setting… your chance is coming!
