i rewatched this pre-Prometheus, as i saw it once the day it came out and hated it. I still hated it upon rewatching it and thought theres maybe 5 minutes worth watching in the entirety of the film. When it was announced they'd turned the Alien and Predator franchises into a PG13 mash up i gave up hope. I also remember finding the "Whoever Wins, We Lose" tagline funny. Far more entertained by that then the movie itself.

Just wanted to remind you Home Alone 5 just premiered on ABC. That's right, another made-for-tv sequel.

You got another addition to the franchise, my friend.

I remember having a problem with it taking place in a snowy landscape when Predators use a heat wave to their advantage. Also, alien queen rampaging around like the T. Rex in Jurassic Park was weird to me.

Would have worked better if humans where stalked by Aliens and Predators...turn it into a Predator film and an Alien film...where the goal of the humans is to stay out of the way of both. Then at the end only one of each remains and they must destroy the queen. Just a story idea.

One of the things that bothered me most about the movie was the idea that humans lived in Antarctica back when it was a jungle. Given that human civilization is 10 thousand years old and Antarctica had ceased being habitable MILLIONS of years prior to that, it seems like a rocky foundation to try and build a movie on and suspension of disbelieve doesn't apply for things so glaringly lazy and stupid. Maybe could be overlooked if the rest of the movie was awesome, but it wasn't.

The only thing I really remember about this movie is its win of the "Truth in Advertising" Award. The tagline was "Whoever wins, we lose." How true.

If there was any movie that needed to resurrect Event Horizon-era Paul WS Anderson, it was this one. Sure, Event Horizon being his best isn't saying much *AND* he was working on a PG-13 leash but come the fuck on, Fox.

The issues with this movie are manifold, but the biggest problem I have is that in order for the beasties to work together in the same story, compromises had to be made in regards to their uncompromisingly lethal natures. Also, why couldn't the humans be Colonial Marines? Ugh, I just hate how the AVP movies turn me into a cranky fanboy, AICN goon.

The only part of this movie I liked was the shadow play of the power loader from Aliens morphing into the Queen at the start. That was pretty neat. Alas, it was all rapidly downhill from there.

When I saw this in theaters on opening weekend, I HATED it. Then, I watched it after seeing Prometheus and found that while I still thought it was kind of plodding, it wasn't the level of terrible I had remembered it being. It's too bad the movie takes so long to get silly and stupidly fun. I was also bummed about it being PG-13 and toning down the level of human violence, but then I'd get that wish with AVP: Requiem and found out that it didn't help as much as I thought it would.

When you talk about the Chariots/Mountains connections, I'm reminded that while I sat in the theater watching Prometheus, I realized that the Butthole Triumvirate (Spaihts/Scott/Lindelof) swiped AVP's opening (and that ancient civilizations were inspired/controlled by these creatures) almost completely - right on down to the character telling another character why they shouldn't have guns, and the subsequent snarky rebuttal. At the end of the day, the only difference in the plot is the lamest part - the Engineers.

And then you realize that Anderson did a better job of making this stuff mean a fucking thing in the confines of his film than Sir Rid did. How terrifying...

Part of the choice to concentrate on the Predators instead of the Xenoguys is that the Xeno isn't capable of much in the way of character. I feel like the Engineers in Scott's film are an acknowlegement of that. There had to be some sort of bridge character, lest we were just watching Xenomorphs run amuk.

And what's the problem THERE, exactly...?
