There are an infinite number of characters he could be. Why does it have to be a character from TOS or the movies or the books? It could be an entirely new character.

Didn’t Garth of Ivar have the ability to shape-shift? I still can’t get past the official synopsis and it’s “chess game” between Kirk and the villain – I thought it was an obvious reference to the chess-derived code that Garth tried to figure out in his TOS episode. He also was saved from life-threatening injuries in that episode by an alien race that taught him to manipulate his form – which might link with the scene in STID in which he is offering to save the boy’s life. He is also imprisoned in an asylum in that episode. I’m still calling Garth.

Exactly, there’s only so many characters that Cumberbatch could be playing and two of them have already been named and discussed all over the place. Unless he turns out to be fucking Galactus or something, I don’t see how the audience isn’t going to just shrug their shoulders and be all like, “oh, so that’s who it is.”

Whoever Cumberbatch turns out to be, it’s guaranteed to be a heluva lot less interesting than the theories being put forward. That’s par for the course where Abrams is concerned. He knows how to tease a cock like nobody else, but the result is always an anticlimax.
