Great write-up, Tim. I love it when I read a review and agree with the critic almost 100%. It doesn;t happen often, so in this case, I felt the need to comment. I can honestly say I expressed the same concerns about the “rich white people” formula during the first 5 mins of the film, but was able to ignore that through the normalcy of Mann and Rudd. To say this is Mann’s best work is an understatement. The scene with her driving away from the Dr.’s, after she finds out she’s pregnant, is down-right GREAT acting. And yes, that’s from Leslie Mann, an actress, IMO, who has been only serviceable to good throughout her career. Of course, Rudd is still the best “every man” going in Hollywood today.
All in all a very entertaining and funny film. Certainly not perfect, but in the end I bought that ticket to be entertained and Mr. Apatow delivered. And that’s appreciated.

I’d have to side with you on this one. I actually think it’s his worst film yet, but I’m not saying it’s complete crap or anything.
He’s clearly getting weaker and weaker as he goes, smudging that line of running his films way too long and attempting to balance out comedy and drama as he goes.

I loved 40/Virgin, thought Knocked Up worked for what it was and LOVED the first half of Funny People, but much how like that film got weighed down by a directionless second act, This is 40 gets bogged down by entire chunks of nothing.
Sort-of funny, sort-of dramatic, but never fully anything.
