Kind of hard to believe you haven’t seen the Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush version of Les Mis. I’d say it’s definitely worth seeing, just because those two guys are awesome. I always lose interest in the second half of the film, but I think that’s probably just because I’m always annoyed by the whole ‘teenagers in love ruin everything because they can’t control their hormones’ plots.

I knew the diction discussion would come up –and it’s totally fair– but it’s been called enough things and the terms have been interpreted so many ways that I felt safe calling it an opera. It’s certainly not simply a musical.

John Cameron Mitchell (to great effect) sang his vocals live for the Hedwig and the Angry Inch film, and the process has been utilized before. I’m not sure why Les Mis is getting a lot of talk about this. Not knocking the film as I haven’t seen it yet, just the claim some involved with it have made that it’s something truly unique.

Talks about the difference between the two. Basically, it boils down to opera is a song with a story attached to it. Musical is a story with song attached to it. There is so little non-singing in the stage show, that my playbill has it labelled an operaretta

Nice review, but Les Mis is musical theater, not opera, and certainly not “grand opera.”

Wonderfully on point review Renn! As a huge, huge, huge fan of the source material, book and stage production. I loved the film. It was hard getting over hearing Russel Crowe’s South Park voice in my head saying….”Russel Crowe Fightin’ ‘Round the World, and him naming the ship at the beginning “Tugga”!! but I was prepared for Pierce Brosnan Mamma Mia bad, so i was happy with his performance.
