It seems that feeding a monkey the occasional ice cream will keep you alive during the inevitable ape revolution!

Jason Clarke, most recently appearing as the magnetic CIA operative working alongside Jessica Chastain’s character in Zero Dark Thirty, has just been added to the cast of Matt Reeve’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. While overshadowed by Chastain’s Oscar-nominated performance and all the frustrating controversy that stained the film’s reception, Clarke is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Bigelow’s film, and he’s certainly a fine addition to this one.

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume Clarke’s character will effectively replace James Franco’s as the human lead, as the film will apparently feature a surviving group of human scientists trying to combat a plague that is wiping out humans on Earth, even as Caesar works to maintain control of his ape nation 15 years after the uprising he led against mankind. That said, they’ll surely have to acknowledge what happened to Will Rodman, and I’m sure Franco will be game for a cameo.

There’s no actual details on Clarke’s role but it’s a logical conclusion that he’s not hoping into a mocap suit , and Clarke is more than capable of leading a film. If you’re looking for more of his recent work, he does appear in last year’s utterly unremarkable Lawless, and will next hit the big screen in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

Dawn is set to roll beginning this spring.
