Taylor Kitsch is the problem with neither Battleship nor John Carter, but unfortunately the man just was not in the right place at the right time to go A-list last year. Even Savages –which has been unfairly maligned and features a very strong performance from  Kitsch– did nothing good for anybody involved.

Had any or all of those films hit as expected I’m not sure we’d be hearing about Kitsch signing on with Mandalay Vision for a horror movie from the director of Becoming Jane with a script from Pandorum-writer Travis Milloy, but here we all are. The film will have Kitsch playing a sheriff who plays a sadistic game with a man he arrests for passing through his desert town.

Kitsch does have another film with Peter Berg lined up that will put him up against Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch, Eric Bana, and Ben Foster, so it’s not as if the actor will be immediately lost to the DTV world. The guy’s good enough that he’ll line up great gigs before long, once the dust has settled a little more on 2012…
