I’d be lying if I didn’t mention the tiny bit of air that Spring Breakers has sucked out of the premise of pretty kids breaking bad, especially when Korine’s effort looks so hypnotically colorful and weird and entertaining. Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring however –which tells the real-life story of a group of Hollywood kids that routinely broke into expensive homes and ripped off millions in good from folks like Paris Hilton– takes a more desaturated, less-fever-dream tack towards its story, and still looks like an interesting movie.
There’s just something so compelling about a tale that, from the instant its start you just know it’s going nowhere good.
The film features Emma Watson letting out a little bit of her darker side, and she’s joined by Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, and Halston Sage (and yes, Paris Hilton cameos). This film of an American Apparel ad gone wrong hits theaters June 14th. If Korine’s aforementioned effort breaks out the way I suspect it’s going to, expect to see this one pushed even harder.
