Mike Mitchell Gallery PostcardI’m a big fan of portraiture of film characters, so Mike Mitchell’s work is some of my favorite. The artist will be enjoying his own Mondo gallery show, the big follow-up to the Ken Taylor/Tyler Stout show that last filled out the space.

Mitchell’s work is straightforward enough, so check it out. The edition sizes are infuriatingly tiny, to the point that griping about the cost vs. size ratio is moot considering the INSANE prices these are going to reach in the secondary market. *sigh* I’ll enjoy the JPEGs…

This is about half of the portraits being unveiled at the gallery, so look out for a full glimpse once that happens on Friday. You can read a cool interview with the artist at Austinist.

MONDO ANNOUNCES NEXT GALLERY SHOW FEATURING
THE ARTWORK OF MIKE MITCHELL

A Collection of Portraits From Icons Of Film

Austin, TX— Monday, April 22– Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces its next gallery show featuring the artwork of Mike Mitchell which will run from April 26th to May 25th at the Mondo Gallery located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX. The Mondo Mike Mitchell show will feature a series of portraits as limited edition giclees for subjects that range from crowd favorites to characters that are slightly underappreciated in pop culture art. The gallery will open to the public on April 26th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm with regular business hours to follow for the show’s duration.

Commenting on his artwork, Mike Mitchell said, “for the portrait series, I wanted to keep the personalities there, at least how they exist in my own mind. Then apply that to a traditional portrait, something that most of these characters wouldn’t be doing. There’s an ironic sense about them that I like, but I also just really love these dudes for who they are, and I didn’t want to take too much of that away. When I watch a movie and really connect with a character, I often feel a strong urge to draw/paint that person. This show is allowing me to do that, it’s giving me the chance to catch up on years of great characters that I appreciate and admire.”
