jainasolo-bd60If you have any familiarity with the Star Wars Extended Universe (I don’t, but even I read some EU books in middle school) then you’ll recognize the names “Jaina Solo” and “Jacen Solo.” The extended universe progency of Han Solo and Leia Skywalker, the Luke-trained pair of Jedi eventually come to represent the bifurcated soul of the post-Empire universe (or something). You see, Jacen goes super duper evil and Jaina becomes a Galaxy-saving badass pilot and warrior.

Well if this completely unsubstantiated rumor from the Schmoes Know podcast (via frequent, if often spotty scooper El Mayimbe) is worth anything, then these two characters may be key to the plot of JJ Abrams’ Episode VII. This is the supposed casting brief they’ve gotten their hands on, suspiciously limited though it is…

Storyline: Two 17 year old twins, a girl and a boy, are trained by their uncle Luke to be the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy. Problems arise when the male twin turns to the dark side.

Jaina Solo – Female, 17 years old, lead. – Jacen’s twin sister, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy, trained by her uncle Luke Skywalker

Jacen Solo – Male, 17 years old, lead – Jaina’s twin brother, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the world. A loner who is constantly struggling with the idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. Starts to turn to the dark side. Full of conviction that what he is doing is the “right thing”. Will eventually become Darth Caedus.

Honestly, the sourcing on this is so minimal that I put no stock in it, but it’s at least interesting for two reasons. First is the jaina soloidea that though it’s been resolutely stated Star Wars canon from the books is in no way sacred, that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t snatch ideas from it. It was said Episode VII would be an “original story,” but does that mean characters might not be cherry-picked?

What is genuinely interesting to me is the idea that the new Star Wars film could feature a female protagonist. Ensemble story though it will likely be, that would still be quite a turn from the patriarchal destiny setup of the original trilogy (there were two Skywalkers after all- it could have been Luke that was the backup hero). It would also be a huge turn from the “I don’t know who matters and what’s going” of the Prequel Trilogy.

Is JJ Abrams the director to do something as cool as have a, gasp,  girl save the Star Wars universe and otherwise become a hugely powerful badass? I don’t know. Maybe. I suppose we’ll find out soon enough.

That would be awfully cool though.
