joss whedonEven as James Gunn instagrams from the set of his Guardians of the Galaxy camera tests and Joss Whedon preps The Avengers 2 to take over the studio when Gunn is through, the latter director is already curtailing crossover expectations…

At the screening of Man Of Steel I caught last week, a solid 75% of the patrons in the theater stuck around through the credits till the lights came up and the screen went dark. If the audible sounds of disappointment were any indication, Marvel has blockbuster consumers well trained to expect the teases and easter eggs that help tie these films together. Thus many people would expect that weird movie with the talking racoon to have some kind of crossover with the forthcoming The Avengers 2, especially since the villain Thanos appears to be a common thread between them.

According to Joss Whedon though, you should vaguely temper your expectations.

“We’re following ‘Guardians’ at Shepperton but we won’t be swapping cast members. Every movie is its own thing and has to be. Unless I take a lot of peyote and write a very different draft… and I’m not ruling that out.”

Now since that’s such a non-specific statement and Marvel has been known to lie, that doesn’t mean there can’t be ANY crossover, or that a post-credits tease won’t put someone somewhere else in the universe. Holding your breath that the Guardians play a big part in the third act of The Avengers 2 may not be the best idea however.

Still, there are rumors that the script for Guardians has some Earth component, and there were all those busted rumors that Iron Man might do some Galaxy-trotting. Surely something is going to rope Marvel’s new galactic franchise into their multi-phase scheme.
