I’m particularly excited by Syd Mead’s involvement with the film. That’s his concept art and if you’re not familiar, he’s the man who helped design the world of Alien and Blade Runner. He’s a “futurist,” which is another way of saying, someone who thinks about what the future will look like for a living.
But Damon Lindeloff scares me a little. The creator of Lost co-wrote the screenplay and he’s far better at asking questions than he is providing answers. How is he getting around that in this film?
“Another big influence for Jeff Jensen and I when we first started talking about this story was Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Lindelof says. “Somehow it was able to do what no modern movies are able to do, which is tell a story that doesn’t have a bad guy who is trying to blow up the planet, or giant robots fighting, or lots of karate—though who doesn’t love karate? It was so not plot driven. It was just a pure discovery movie. It was pure what-if. Just that idea of what’s going on here? What does this mean? That was a real jumping off place for a movie like this.”
I can buy that, but it doesn’t make me any less worried that the mystery of Tomorrowland will end on a nonsensical new-age note, pulling back to reveal the universe was being witnessed through the prism of a dream catcher the whole time.
There are a lot of interesting details in the article, including a great many references to Harry Potter and Platform 9 & 3/4. I’m pinning my hopes on Brad Bird to make this all work. He hasn’t made a bad film yet.
