After eons in development hell, the next Ghostbusters is finally happening. It took a brand new pitch to get the project moving again, but I think the female-centric pitch has way more potential than whatever might’ve happened otherwise. Feig has been circling the project for a while, so this announcement isn’t an enormous surprise, but it’s still a pleasant one. Screenwriter Katie Dippold worked on The Heat with Feig, which gives me some comfort that we’ll see something fresh and cohesive.

The project currently has no release date, but I suspect we’ll hear one before the year is over. Also: cue rumors of Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig being cast in the film. Same for Maya Rudolph. Whoever ends up playing the new ‘busters, there are two veteran cast members who I hope will make a return: Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver. It just wouldn’t feel right without Annie Potts answering the phone with a brusque “Ghostbusters, whaddaya want?” According to The Hollywood Reporter, this likely won’t happen because the film will be a franchise reboot with little to no connection to the previous films.

What are your thoughts on this, chewers? Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved comedies of all time. Can Feig and Dippold make something worthy of the title?
