Bad news out of the DC camp today: Michelle MacLaren, director of cinematic television shows such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, has ditched the Wonder Woman film. Her reasons? You know it, you love it, it’s that ol’ Hollywood PR term: creative differences. This could mean anything from MacLaren disliking aspects of the script, how the overall DC cinematic universe plan has affected the film, or the fact that Gal Gadot is not good for this picture at all. It could also be something as mundane as MacLaren losing interest. We probably won’t know for a while.

This is a bummer for a lot of reasons, the most important being that MacLaren is a hell of a director that deserves to shine in the feature film world. As someone who doesn’t want to see the DC cinematic universe fail (I’m a DC boy at heart, and I am not hopeful for the future of these films, but that doesn’t mean I want them to crash and burn), this isn’t doing much to keep me excited. MacLaren’s attachment as director was the big “Yes!” component of this project for me, and losing her is a big blow to my enthusiasm for the film.

This does put the film into an uneasy flux state. Now the script could be vulnerable and any number of changes could occur. I’ve been a big fan of DC’s bold director choices, so I hope they can find an equally strong substitute for MacLaren (never gonna happen, but I’ll just put this out into the universe: Kathryn Bigelow) in such a short amount of time (Wonder Woman is/was scheduled to shoot this fall).

And if it turns out MacLaren left to go direct Captain Marvel, the playground fight will have officially been won by the House of Ideas. That won’t be the case, but Hera give me strength if it was…
