entity

In 1982’s The Entity, Barbara Hershey’s boob is groped by an invisible hand.

Not only is it an incredibly weird and disturbing moment, but it also happens to be a pretty cool practical effect that uses an insert shot of a rubber tit. The rest of the movie is a pretty decent supernatural horror with a VERY uncomfortable amount of sexual menace.

Like most things that made money, The Entity is coming back, and you can thank producers James Wan and Roy Lee. The Hayes brothers (the guys who wrote The Conjuring and its upcoming sequel) will write the script.

I know remakes are hardly news these days, but The Entity is a weird choice for updating. It’s very sexually exploitative, which I don’t think will sit well with contemporary audiences. You release one short clip from Jurassic World in which porn ‘stache Pratt flirts aggressively and suggestively with a reserved female co-worker and now the film’s buzz has soured a bit.

Audiences are very sensitive to outdated sexual and gender dynamics in cinema these days. I think that’s generally a good thing, but it also means that a contemporary remake of The Entity likely won’t have the dangerous and exploitative feel of the original, which is what made it so memorable in the first place. Can this new crew balance the tone in a way that allows this remake to keep its edge? Tell me what you think down there in the argument comment section.
