I never thought in a million years that this would happen, but Lionsgate thinks there’s money in remaking Canadian cult film Cube. A Sci-Fi Channel mainstay from back in the day, this low-budget horror was Vincenzo Natali’s feature directing début. He’s gone on to make movies like Splice and Haunter, and has also directed a few episodes of NBC’s Hannibal.

Cube was successful enough to spawn a little direct-to-video franchise with two little sequels, but Lionsgate wants this sucker a lot bigger: Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) is producing with Roy Lee, Philip Gawthorne is writing, and up-and-comer Saman Kesh will be directing. Kesh attracted some attention when Fox picked up his short Controller for adaptation (see below, it’s cool!). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gawthorne’s script will follow a new original take from Kesh, described as “a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new ‘digital’ race.”

What are they gonna call it? Cubed. I’m not crazy about the title (it sounds like a spoof or a romantic comedy), but it could be worse.
