I used to love the character of Gambit. He’s was one of my top five favorite X-Men (my number one is Cyclops. I’ve worn glasses since the first grade, so I identified with him. I couldn’t shoot lasers out of my eyes, though that didn’t stop me from pretending to do so) and is still a staple on my Marvel vs. Capcom 2 team. But, over the years I’ve found the character to be kind of one note, his only interesting aspect having to do with the woman he’s in love with, Rogue (who is way more compelling as a character).

That’s why I’m intrigued but not expecting much from Gambit. Although charisma machine Channing Tatum will be playing the Ragin’ Cajun, I haven’t had much of a reason to care about this project. Until today. EW reports that Rupert Wyatt has signed on to direct the comic book adaptation.

While Wyatt is mostly known for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it’s his work on The Gambler (ahhh, I see why he got the job now) and the under-appreciated The Escapist that has me interested in what he’d do with a superhero story. He’s a solid director, and I hope he’ll bring something innovative to a character that seems more like a supporting part than a lead.

But seriously, go watch The Escapist. I’ll even give you the Netflix link. Here.
