A year ago we told you that Scott Frank was writing and directing a movie that would be essentially a ground-up reimagining of Conquest of the Planet Of the Apes; called Caesar it would be about a genetically altered simian that led an ape revolution. Click here to read that initial report.
And that was the last we heard of it.
Until now. It turns out that Frank has left the project and the future of Caesar remains up in the air at Fox; my guess is that the project goes back on the shelf for the time being. Or rather that it’s been on the shelf; my sources indicate that Frank has been off the movie for a little while now.
So what killed Caesar? Exactly what you’d expect from Fox: it was too expensive and seen as too dark. I’m not sure what other tone they were expecting from a movie about the end of humanity; maybe something with more uplift. I haven’t read Frank’s draft, but I’m guessing the film might have been too cerebral for the studio as well; Frank’s a smart writer, and Fox makes movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You can see how this wasn’t always a good fit.
I’m kind of bummed. Frank’s take on the material sounded unique and different enough that it wouldn’t have been a shameless remake of what came before. I’m always for smart, thought-provoking scifi, and that’s what this was shaping up to be. Here’s hoping the Planet of the Apes IP manages to stay dormant for the rest of the current regime. Maybe whoever comes next will understand that the original series was dark and daring and smart and will be interested in going that way again.

I wonder how differently Devin would judge Avatar if it had lifted heavily from POTA?
Where there is fire, there is smoke. And in that smoke, from this day forward, my people will crouch and conspire and plot and plan for the inevitable day of Man's downfall – the day when he finally and self-destructively turns his weapons against his own kind. The day of the writing in the sky, when your cities lie buried under radioactive rubble! When the sea is a dead sea, and the land is a wasteland out of which I will lead my people from their captivity! And we will build our own cities in which there will be no place for humans except to serve our ends! And we shall found our own armies, our own religion, our own dynasty! And that day is upon you… now!
oh good..another planet of the apes article..because everyone on this site clamors for more info on such a boring half assed series..actually no, thats just devin
OLD!
Guys,You could always just not read it. The endless hate and whining is really tiresome.
No. Devin deserves the criticism. They could be done in a more effective way, but the complaints are still valid. This is one of the most popular movie sites on the Internet and Devin needs to treat as such. Devin has a good portion of the little power that movie websites have over the industry and he is squandering it by writing articles complaining about how his favorite is not being worked on or how the Internet does not fact check enough.
Yeah, like when Devin was going to slog through every episode of Star Trek: TOS. I guess he finally figured out no one gave a shit.
I am a huge Planet of the Apes, and I am very interested in any happenings. Keep reporting on any ape-related happenings, Devlin.
@6: If CHUD is "one of the most popular sites on the internet" and Devin is its main writer, maybe that means he's doing something right.
Hey, thanks for reminding me about the hilarious TOS column. Whatever happened to that? I for one enjoyed the hell out of it. Three-and-a-half baby Clint Howards, indeed. lulz
I was initially interested in this movie. If you haven't read it, pick up the (novella) Planet of the Apes from your bookstore. A very "classic" story that still deals with many issues: Man as God, environment, and imperialism. Yes, it is Avatar in many ways.
@9: CHUD is one of the most popular MOVIE sites on the net, but Devin can not take all the credit for that fact (nor do I think he would). Nick, Beaks and Smilin' Jack, along with Devin are just a few that have made this site great throughout the years. Devin needs to keep up that legacy. Which he had been doing for a while, but in the past year, or so, things have changed. Maybe it was the move to LA.
FOX's big movie for 2010 is A-TEAM with that shite director Carnahan from Smokin' Asses…erm Aces…..nuff said.
Why in Hades is FOX worried about the defeat of humanity as a box-office killer??? It worked for Avatar!
Does the Planet of the Apes story need to be told again, ever,we get the point and why would an alterd monkey be so smart as to take over from mankind ,surely he would just be president of the USA and scratch his nuts all day.No I dont blame Fox why risk millions, they are only in this to make money.
Having said that if a piece of nonsense LIKE aVATAR CAN MAKE MONEY THEN ANYTHING CAN,EVEN MONKEYS
I picture a hybrid remake featuring with the closing line "Soylent Green is Apes."
Beware the beast man for he is the devil's pawn…………
Bummer, I too was hoping for a good quality remake, we do need these smarter movies, too bad the studio's are populated, not by filmmakers, but by unimaginative bankers. so we get endless dross with a few good movies….lets hope that a different studio gets Scott frank to do the film!
I'm a big fan of POTA too, and was really hoping this would be the relaunch it deserves – with the proper investment and a 'risk' taken with the script, it could be as relevant today as the original was in '68. That movie was also a big risk that no studio thought an audience would take seriously, but conventional thinking was proved wrong. Anyway, better no movie for now than another half-assed family action attempt, but Fox needs to realise the potential they're squashing. Thanks for the update.
Please keep updating us on any APES sequels or news. There are alot of fans like myself who want this new film to be made, and if enough fans get involved by showing their interest, maybe they'll get going on it.Who cares about the cost, look at Avatar made billions!an Apes film abot how it started would be cool,a war between the humans and apes, and the apes win….too cool.
