With The Dark Tower on everyone’s mind, it’s only natural studios would begin looking to adapting some of Stephen King’s other epic stories.
Today, Heat Vision announced that Warner Bros and CBS Films are teaming up to produce a new, big screen adaptation of The Stand.
Hell yes!
I love The Stand. It was probably my first real exposure to King, and certainly my first experience with post-apocalyptic horror. It scared the hell out of me far more than The Shining ever did. It’s been a lot of fun (and just as shivery) to reread the Marvel retelling. I know I’m not alone in having enjoyed Mike Perkins’ lush art, and wishing it could be redone on the screen somehow. The mini-series was ok — Gary Sinise as Stu just about saves it single-handedly — but there was so much missing. It was so tame.
Now we might get the real version. (If only they could tie it into The Dark Tower — but rival studio means no crossover without a miracle.) Fingers crossed. There’s currently no writers and no director attached, but that will quickly change in the next couple of weeks.

FUCKING A! I’ve been waiting for this for years.
Not to be a nerd, but I’m going to say Christian Bale, Jon Hamm, and Jeremy Renner as my top choices for Stu, and Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, or Mila Kunis as Frannie.
Also, Walton Goggins needs to be in this movie in some form, as either Lloyd or Trashcan Man, or I will cry.
I can’t figure how they would include more from the book in less hours of screen-time, and I thought the mini-series was… good enough. Walt Goggins would be a reason for me to check it out, though.
I’m pretty excited about this news. The Stand was a book that was meant for the big screen and Lynch’s involvement makes me happy.
David Lynch? You got some insider info no one else is aware of, cause I’m not seeing anything, anwhere about anyone with the name Lynch being involved in this.
Call me when someone does a proper adaptation of Desperation, one with it’s balls intact.

I’m not sure how they’ll be able to find anyone who can match Jamey Sheridan as Randall Flagg in terms of screen presence and sheer animal magnetism.
It won’t work as a 2 or even 3 hour film. The miniseries had a great cast- especially Gary Sinise and Jamey Sheridan. I only know Sheridan in the Law & Order franchise and The Stand, and I want to see him in more stuff.
For some reason I always thought Nick was black. Did anyone else?
Not at all. And speaking as a black guy, I can’t imagine why you would, because, well we’re just awful (I speak from firsthand experience). Nick is/was very much not awful.
Please forgive my rampant, self-loathing racism. I just read an article concerning Tyler Perry.
I liked the mini-series well enough back in the day. I’d be hard-pressed to see how a single movie could encompass the entire book (even with heavy editing of subplots/characters/etc…). I’ll have more faith in this product if it’s announced that it’s a multi-film project. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with, no matter what. It’s probably my favorite King work (Haven’t read the Dark Tower series).
I think this would obviously be at least two big movies, if not three.
This movie will be so hard not to fuck up.
1000+ Page Novels always work so well as a 140 minute film.
If they had some balls, they’d pull a LOTR, and make this book into three films, or atleast two.
Christ…unless this is done as two (or even three) films, no fucking way. Has anyone else happened to read the Rospo Pallenberg adaptation that was done for Warner Bros. around 1990? It tried to condense the entire novel into a single, 120-minute picture, and it failed miserably.
For the record, I quite enjoyed the 1994 mini-series, and still throw it into the DVD player on occasion. Unless you have at least six screen hours to work with, you’re gonna be gutting the novel bigtime — and even the extended TV adaptation had to throw out a great deal in the end.
[...] to see every lame movie adaptation. As a fan, I can say that this week’s news of both a theatrical remake of The Stand and the possible casting of Javier Bardem as Roland in the Dark Tower films and TV series is all [...]
