Okay, this news has me too tickled to fuck around with a casually meandering introductory paragraph. I can’t hold it in…

The Coen Bros are thinking about making a full-on horror movie!

Coen the Ethan was in London, where he stopped by Empire‘s office to do an interview concerning True Grit. Empire, being the wily madmen that they are, eventually asked Ethan if he and his brother had ever considered doing a true horror movie, and not just a film that dabbles in horror, like Blood Simple. Ethan responded: “Funny you should ask, yes, we’re working on a couple of scripts now, one of which it would be fair to call a full-on horror movie. Frances McDormand is the monster.

And then thousands upon thousands of nerds came in their pants.

Empire makes sure to note that Ethan was clearly joking about that second sentence, and quite dead serious about the first one. Obviously, saying “we’re working on a couple scripts now” is a far cry from “our next greenlit movie is,” but the Brothers Coen have been so productive as of late I think there is good reason to be optimistic. Plus, with True Grit being the surprise mega hit that it is, any film the Coens want to make is going to get bankrolled at this point. Goddamn, I hope this movie happens. And I hope it happens soon. I don’t even care if it turns out good. I just want to see it. I love when filmmakers skip around what genre they’re working in, and I also think all filmmakers should take at least one stab at the horror genre (pun!).

Ethan also dropped some further info to Empire about the Bros upcoming projects:

Gambit was just a writing job. It seems like the movie is going to get made but not by us; it never was to have been. Old Fink, the Barton Fink sequel, John Turturro is not old enough yet. And the whole thing may be more a thought experiment than a movie. We don’t really know what we’re doing yet; we’re working on a couple of scripts.
