Battlefield 2 is one of the best post-Modern Warfare shooters in recent memory. With refined and addictive multiplayer modes and a military story campaign that was actually worth sitting through, developer DICE crafted one of this generation’s exciting FPS franchises. As the marketing machine for the recently announced sequel begins to rumble, DICE and publisher EA bring us an early look at Battlefield 3’s gameplay, showing off the bells and whistles of their revamped Frostbite engine:

 

I might have picked a more distinctive setting than “Iraqi urban settlement #728,” but those are some of the most realistic lighting effects this side of Nestor Almendros. There’s no sign of Battlefield 2’s amazing structural damage system in the video, but we’ve been assured that the sequel won’t skimp on the strategic mayhem.

Battlefield 3 arrives this Fall.
