Joshua was rightly skeptical about the extremely stylized, often gorgeous trailer for Tarsem Sing’s Immortals. It definitely boasts plenty of the beauty meets cheese meets high-production-value meets laughably-bad-effects dichotomy that he and Julie Taymor both seems to excel at cramming their films with. It’s the whole theater aesthetic thing I think- sometimes it translates well, sometimes it doesn’t (hell, in Taymor’s case, sometimes it doesn’t even translate well back to theater!). Ultimately a good cast, a fun story, and lots of big images should win the day and make this one worth watching, but it would be nice if there’s a well told story at the core. These character posters won’t tell you if that’s the case or not, but they will show off the big cast of gods and titans that are stuffed in this gold-leafed mythological tale about:

the Titan Hyperion (Rourke) declares war on humanity, he quests for the Bow of Epirus. Created by Ares, the god of war, the bow which will allow Hyperion to free the rest of the Titans and take revenge on Mount Olympus. As is always the way, the gods need a mortal champion — Theseus (Cavill), is chosen by Zeus (Luke Evans) to wreck some shit. He is accompanied by the priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and a slave (Stephen Dorff), to protect his homeland and save the gods.

I’ll give it credit that the movie looks genuinely golden, rather than just simply pissed-tinted like some films that go for that look.

Any of these can be “clicked to HUGE.”
