For the next 30 days I’ll torture you with my stupid answer to the writing prompts taken from the 30 Day Writing Challenge and the 30 Day Song Challenge. Here we go:

Writing Challenge – Day 20: Discuss your favourite movie and why it’s so special to you.
I don’t have a favourite movie. I love too many of them to favour just one. So, in the spirit of keeping things short as with all posts from this writing challenge, I’m going to quickly mention the most superficial reasons why I like some of the movies I love:

  • Saturday Night And Sunday Morning has one of the most beautiful, realistic, and saddest end I’ve ever seen.
  • Zentropa’s final death is epic and poetic.
  • District 9 emotionally shook me in a way no other movie had done before. And the baby alien is divine.
  • The Pillow Book and Yellow Earth are exercises in visual poetry.
  • The Bourne Identity redefined the spy genre and has one of my favourite marriages of image and audio ever.
  • Before Sunset is what it is, and it is perfect the way it is.
  • Existenz did a great job at playing with realities within realities. Consequently, so does Inception. And The Matrix.
  • The Rules of Attraction has brilliant editing. On the same note, Highlander employs every single editing technique possible in a single movie.
  • Secretary, Pride and Prejudice, and 500 Days of Summer are romance stories without a single ounce of lame in them.
  • The Flight of The Dragons is my favourite childhood animated movie.
  • Ghost In The Shell is my favourite anime movie and surprised me with its infinite existential questions.
  • Total Recall is just too cool and never gets old.
  • I love how Cypher deals with identity and corporate espionage.
  • The Commitments was the first Irish movie I ever saw and I’m still obsessed with its soundtrack.

And I’m going to leave it at that. But there are a lot more.

Song Challenge – Day 20: A song that you listen to when you’re angry.
That “honour” goes to Pink Floyd. This song has been a bit of an antidote for rage on a few occasions.
