Around Comic Con, I expressed pointed doubt that Sin City 2 would actually ever come together, since RR made it clear that it would have to happen now or it would happen never. Apparently the money wasn’t too far away at that point though, as Robert has now stated that everything is in place except for the latest draft pages that will mark the start of shooting. The same is true of Machete Kills (which will feature a trailer for the space-based Machete Kills Again).
Is it just my asshole that instinctively clinches up when a director admits that every element is in place and money is set, and all that’s preventing shooting is for the screenwriting to be done?
“We’ve already got the budget, just waiting for the script. As soon as we’re finished writing we get to start the shoot.”
Ya know? It’s just so much the opposite of promising to hear the writing process –the part of the process that typically comes first, because there are stories and ideas that drive someone to collect them so that they may be transformed into a film– be casually regarded as merely a roadblock to shooting. I know RR loves the principle photography process, but damn. Sin City is a film so indulgent in its gimmick as to become a slog*, while Machete entirely fails to understand or capitalize on its gimmick as to become an incoherent mess of flat jokes and clumsy homages. So the idea that it is again the concepts of these film merely existing that is more compelling to the filmmaker than the actual story being told is… a bummer. I fucking hate film critiquing that relies on calling a movie out for being “in love with itself” or “not as smart/cute/funny as it thinks it is,” but I suspect these RR franchises might be apt targets for such appropriately lazy criticism.
We should being seen materials for these flicks soon, as RR churns this stuff out with the quickness once he gets started.
Am I an asshole, or are you as non-plussed by these sequels as I am… hit twitter, dump in the comments, or plop in the boards to state your opinion(s).

* 17-year-old Renn thought Sin City was the baddest shit ever when it came out, and even then I knew it was punishingly paced.

Excited about MACHETE KILLS. SIN CITY 2? Not so much.
Not excited about anything Rodriguez does ever again. Time and time again he takes can’t miss ideas and misses. Why bother?
In all fairness, aren’t the “scripts” for Sin City 2 readily available in most comic shops?
I’ve been aching for Sin City 2 since the 1st movie came out. In my midwestern opinion, Rodriguez has only directed 4 movies…maybe 5. I’ll quickly explain.
El Mariache isn’t a movie to me but more of an application. Sort of a ‘Look what I can do and how cheaply I can do it’ sort of thing. Fuck Roadracers. Desperado marks his debut (film #1), which is a remake of the former. Four Rooms doesn’t count because you can’t direct 1/4 of a movie and say you directed Four Rooms. From Dusk till Dawn is film #2, and arguably his best (if you can get over the fact that the band plays instruments made of body parts AND AMPLIFIED SOUNDS ARE PRODUCED.) Then came The Faculty, which is a basically a super long Gap ad with a dumb monster (good band name?), so fuck that movie off a bridge.
Then comes the Spy Kid trilogy. Nope.
Then, movie #3 is Once Upon A Time in Mexico, which is great, but also a sequel to the remake of his original. Sharkdick & Lavacunt? Nope.
Sin City, movie #4, is his best work, even with the loads of flaws, that director’s cut chronological box set is the tits. Planet Terror is good, but it’s based off a fucking joke, and the same goes for Machete, which is stemmed off a joke movie that is based off a joke. Shorts can suck on a baby’s dick and Spy Kids 4 happened. So…in my humbled opinion, he’s directed 4 movies and then fucked off his time on a bunch of bullshit.
Sin City 2 is very welcomed.
Agree except The Faculty is a Tommy Hilfiger ad not GAP.
Oops.
I wouldn’t mind a Sin City sequel. There is still plenty material that they can use for the story, or perhaps work with Frank Miller for some original material. I wouldn’t even mind a second Machete. Heck, I wouldn’t even mind a second Planet Terror, but that’s just me.
Renn Brown, I am definitely interested in…Sin City 2! Machete was solid, but I will pass on any more. I really would…Love another film with Antonio Bandaras’ Mariachi!
Did you just ask if you were an asshole? Stop with the softballs, Renn.
Roger Corman used to start rolling with nothing but a poster. Having an actual script would have sounded to him like the bells of St Peter.
I jest. We all know writing comes first. Inspiration.
Look at TRANSFORMERS! MARVEL movies! CLASH(ES) OF THE TITAN(S)!
Har, har.
I am excited for the possibility of a great film being avaible at the same theather as these two. The problem with Rodriguez is that he does not seem to understand that his projects have failed as concepts time and time again. Machete is a missed joke that is not funny and Sin City is a film that failed to develop beyond its central premise(A filmed version of a graphic novel). Rodriguez is not a film maker but a person who has a made a career out of being Tarantino’s friend. That is why we talk about him.
