The joke's on me, Shunderson. I was so impressed by the reality of Deadwood's sets that I never stopped to consider whether the trees around it were real (what a world we live in, when we can't be certain of the reality of trees). Maybe I’m missing the joke, but I’m fairly certain that screen capture with the caption “CGI is for cocksuckers” is of an entirely CGI forest surrounding the set of Deadwood, which was out in the middle of the desert. I remember hearing on the commentary track that the creators thought it pretty ironic that its the town that looks fake, when it’s the trees that were drawn.

From what I’ve seen so far, they’re similar enough to make it hard to separate them but different enough that it’s just the slight bit jarring. Not in a bad way or anything, though.

I wonder what it’s like to get typecast as a lawman with a hat with barely repressed anger issues.

I’d draw a distinction between the two examples of “geekiness” you present there, actually. At least the folks criticizing the show’s historical accuracy (or lack thereof) are referring to an alleged misrepresentation of fact (and it’s worth noting that even Milch himself, in a link provided in your previous article, tries to refute the charge on historical grounds, rather than appealing to dramatic or artistic license). The geek from “Galaxy Quest,” on the other hand, is pointing out an inconsistency between two fictional representations, and clearly has a very tenuous grip on reality, to boot.

I’ll have to rewatch some Deadwood, but I found there to be many similarities between the two characters. I’m glad that Olyphant is playing both roles. He is awesome in both.

Well, this is awesome. I am palpably excited for this series. And damn, you’re good at writing this stuff. I’ve watched the series through four times or so, and that Seth=Law and Al=Order is a terrifically astute contrast I’ve never heard articulated before. Cocksucker!

Great write-up! This is my first time through and while I wasn’t entirely hooked after the first episode, I was definitely drawn in by the second. I think you’re right, effortless is a very good word for it. I always appreciate it when shows hit the ground running and trust viewers to be able to figure out who people are as things are moving along.
