You’d have been hard-pressed to find a more odd film than Rubber last year, which certainly put director Quentin Dupieux on many radars. The inimitable Jacob Hall hazarded a CHUD festival review for the film out of Fantastic Fest that year, and it ended up being one of the most cogent explanations out there of why this weird little metaphysics trip was such a joy to watch, and he was ultimately quoted in the trailer. Most people ended up seeing Rubber on VOD, and I suspect the same will be true of Dupieux’s follow up film, Wrong, after it debuts at Sundance. If the trailer is any indication, the film replicates a similar strange tone and tendency towards striking visuals familiar to Rubber fans.

Perhaps you noticed a familiar face in there? The brilliant William Fichtner is the casts’ biggest name, joining folks like Steve Little (the voice of Peppermint Butler for any Adventure Time fans!), Arden Myrim, Jared Ward, Bo Barrett, and Jack Plotnick.

I like the trailer, though it’s pretty much worthless to try and surmise what kind of movie this might end up being just from those 50 seconds. I like what I see, but what’s in the trailer could amount to the full sum of plot the movie has, or it could be a very different kind of trip from Dupieux. I would expect the unexpected.

Hopefully the Sundance reviews will be encouraging and its inevitable pick-up and VOD run will actually include some limited theatrical screening. Maybe some of us could get lucky and be able to catch one.
