Speaking as a loather of the Twilight series I can say it’s got nothing to do with male privelege nerd rage against femdom properties (although that’s a problem in other areas). For one thing the Twilight series, despite clearly being written for girls, is all about the worship and adoration of boys, and bad boy archetypes, it’s as antifeminist as a book can be.

The reason for the nerd hate as I see it (and feel it) is completely down to the franchises undeserved level of success. It takes concepts that should be used to enjoyable and entertaining ends, and genre staples that nerds have been fawning about for literally almost a hundred years, vampires, werewolves, and feuding supernatural factions, and poisons the well of these conventions for years to come. But it’s the undeserved thing that is the clincher, in as much as it’s admittedly a petty and stupid thing to be mad over. It’s just such a woefully terrible book series, turned into an incredibly bad film series, that’s been marketed to perfection. So it hurts my nerd feelings to see so many properties, so many books and films of incredible quality, that are eclipsed by Twilight.

The problem is narcissism. It’s been growing like a poison weed for at least a generation and has resulted in exactly the syndrome you’re on about — the fetishizing of our own tastes. It’s the same bullshit posturing that once made people think that a preference for The Stones over The Beatles said anything at all about a person. It’s shallow, masturbatory and ultimately a fast track to irrelelvence.

And while I understand and applaud your attempt to shed light on a real character flaw in the current generation, your marginalizing and demonizing of republicans is just as callow and stupid as the attitude you are decrying. Good article. I think it is a waste of energy to get too angry about the properties we don’t like, when we could be spending that rant time enjoying stuff that does tickle our fancies.

I’ve already got a hefty backlog of great films and TV series to work through; it would be a shame to kill two hours trawling the anti Twilight message boards.

And what the nerds need to remember is that it is the poorly written and mindless trash that makes the clever stuff stick out in the first place. If every day is a sunny day, then what the fuck is a sunny day?

Much like the other person a couple of comments back, I didn’t recognize who the guy on the left was. Now that you’ve said something, I know the name and I know why I know the name, but I don’t feel bad for not knowing what he looked like. Also like the other commenter, I’ve avoided Jersey Shore, but I can’t even pretend like I don’t know what that orange goblin on the right is.

On the topic of nerddom, I’ve learned that the nerds/geeks/whatever that I know tend to have a pretty limited worldview, like when it comes to what “everyone” likes or shouldn’t like, “everyone” just means everyone like them, or at least the million or so people that couldn’t keep “Firefly” on the air for more than 4 months. You know, “Firefly”, the show that everyone loves. Well, everyone except your parents, your grandparents, your little sister, everyone else at school, anyone outside of your gaming group, your neighbors, your co-workers…

It’s Carl Sagan. Even if you don’t recognize him, nearly everyone over 30 has heard of him. He was a famous astrophysicist and author of several popular science books. He was everywhere on TV in the 70s – he’s like the 70s equivalent of Michio Kaku, only more so.

Another editorial about how we should all take it easier on the Twilight fans? I mean, this is a well written little piece, even if it has too much netspeak, and we should — I don’t even have a problem with them, or Twilight, as long as it stays out of my life — but I think it’s getting a little old to be taking the retroactive view that “everyone needs to simma down.” I read at least three editorials on this exact topic, including one on this site, when the movie was released.

What I’d like to know, and what I think would make for a more interesting editorial, is why nerds feel it necessary to harp on Twilight and its fans so goddamn aggressively. I think it’s ultimately symptomatic of a broader nerd rage against femdom in general, most likely. I mean, what makes me want to call the cops if when a 40 year old guy feels the need to belittle entertainment made for young girls.

So with that second picture there, I don’t know who that is on the left. I imagine he’s a science fiction write or scientist of some sort. And of course I know who the person on the right is because EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT HER. I have never seen an episode of Jersey Shore and I have no urge to, but I cannot go buy Cheerios without becoming intimately familiar with her face as its on every magazine at the checkout. The other guy just doesn’t get the same press which I’m sure has something to do with that picture being from the 70′s. I was not even born then. But if you told me his name I imagine I would know him. My point being – who is he?

I don’t think I have ever bitched about Twilight or Transformers or properties of that ilk. Just couldn’t care less about them, not worth expending energy over. What gets me riled up is when properties that were once important to me get fucked over for the sake of a quick buck, be it George Lucas and Star Wars or Peter Jackson making wacky looking dwarves for The Hobbit. It’s difficult to just throw my hands up and say “Ah, whatever”. Other than that, I’m a live-and-let-live type nerd. If someone loves them some Twilight, I’m not gonna rip them a new one. Great work, Jeremy.
