There are plenty of seedy, detective stories that cross into the mob world, but there are far fewer that deal with the mob’s detective. Cogan’s Trade is exactly that, with Brad Pitt playing a man who makes his living doing groundwork for hitmen before getting wrapped up in an investigation of who snatched a ton of mob dough from a protected poker game. It’s a film from Andrew Dominik – following-up his stunning second film, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford — based on the early 70s crime novel from George V. Higgins.
And were “mob detective movie starring Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and Vincent “Johnny Sack” Curatola wasn’t enough*, having the director of the most studiously beautiful film of 2007 (a year that also included No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Children of Men, mind you) should more than seal this as one of any cinephile’s most anticipated of 2012. The Weinsteins were certainly excited about it.
So how about some still shots of some of these great actors in character?
Yes, I can do that for you.
We’re just getting a glimpse of the texture and mood of the film (which has actually had the phrase “comedic thriller” applied at points) but I’m loving it already. I can’t wait to see some shots of the other awesome cast members. There aren’t many movies coming out in 2012 that I wouldn’t strangle to death with my bare hands to see this just a little bit sooner, in fact…

*assuming all of the reported cast-members from a year ago actually made it in front of cameras

You state that ‘Children of Men’ came out the same year as ‘There Will Be Blood’ and ‘Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ but I recall it came out the year before, 2006. IMDB concurs as much.
As for this film, it is one of my most highly anticipated of the year (along with ‘Looper’ and ‘Only God Forgives’). Top notch cast and filmmaker with strong source material, how can it go wrong?
Any word on a release date?
COM was a 2006 premiere and awards contender, but it wasn’t widely “released” (read: dumped) in the States till Jan ’07. You’re still pretty much right that it doesn’t belong with the other guys though- more of my own association mistake.
That greasy hair…such an authentic 48hours-without-sleep job. Nice!
