What an awesome idear for a feature. So awesome you compelled me to re-subscribe to Netflix and actually create an account here after years of lurking. I spent all of my evening yesterday catching up on your past viewing and look forward to following your journey. One recommendation for future consideration (if you haven't seen it): Ink. While made on the cheap (and it shows), there's ambition and artistry that come close to sci fi classics Dark City and the Matrix. I'd love to see what the director could pull off with a real budget.

Hah! Human Centipede 2 is pretty obnoxious in its desire to be both artier and sicker than the original. It's one big meta fuck-you to everyone, and definitely one of the ten sickest movies ever made.
Don't sleep on the completely ridiculous "Tokyo Gore Police" though. In addition to some stunning prosthetics, it's pretty Verhoeven-ish in its story of privatized police and extreme violence.

Oh Jared... I warned you!

I love this film. I caught it on pay-per-view right when it premiered after only reading about it online.
I also expected a lot more graphic nastiness, and was surprised at how well made and suspenseful it turned out to be. Dieter Laser is a revelation as the villan, and the bleak ending really made an impact.

The sequel is not as well put together, it's a LOT more graphic and gross, and has a certain unfocused rambling quality to it. Very different from this first one.

Congratulations, Jared! Now go watch the Muppets!

Yeah, I totally agree with all this. I enjoyed this one much more than I thought I would (I actually trooped out to a midnight screening for it. They had three skeletons rigged up centipede-style in the lobby. It was a nice touch), because it's a pretty decent horror film. I found it unique for indie horror in how... clean it was. Most small-scale horror movies are falling over themselves to make dingy and grimy sets and whatnot (not a bad thing at all, just saying), whereas this one took a steril, almost surgical approach. Very fitting. The opening ten minutes or so are a bit weird, but some have said it's basically taking every horror cliche and cramming them in all at once (girls lost in the woods, always falling down, weirdo house they stay at, etc.) while cranking it up. Whether that was done on purpose to be funny or not is hard to say (that is another thing, this movie's pretty funny at times. I like to think on purpose as well).

In regards to how gross the film is, I too am one of the ones who felt it wasn't nearly as gross as I thought it was going to be. This is in no way at all a bad thing, and I am in fact thankful for it, as if there's one thing that makes me super queasy, it's the nature of the act of the film. I think I was just expecting more because, well... after I watched 120 Days of Sodom (a film I hate with all the fiery passion that dwells within me), my shit-eating bar is just off the map.

Also, Dieter Laser is a great villain with a kickass name. And honestly, that bit towards the end where the centipede moves up the stairs and heads for the exit... it's actually a pretty effective moment in every way. And yeah, that's one super-bleak ending. I wish you the best of luck in the sequel, since by all accounts it has (literally and figuratively) shoved itself up its own asshole one too many times.
Following that film, I'd actually recommend moving A Town Called Panic up a week. It is the ultimate palette cleanser for this situation (in a good way).

I think my expectations were set so low that I was just extremely surprised it was competently made and had some genuine tension in it. I do agree that there is absolutely no reason for it to exist, however. Have you seen the sequel?

I saw this before the word really started getting out. I figured the human centipede aspect would be saved for the big messed up finale, not the focus. Halfway through the mad doctor has them crawling around and bricking into each other mouths...man, I just found it repulsive and hard to sit through.

I'm really surprised that you are giving this such a high mark. I'll give Deiter Laser his due, he's disturbingly authentic; otherwise I'm not entirely sure why this exists or why anyone would want it to exist.
