My 'gram from the Alamo Slaughter, the latest Drafthouse theatre.

Look, the same way other companies that aren’t Mondo make great movie posters, there are other theaters that do the same or similar shit as the Alamo Drafthouse. The thing is, nobody is doing it better, and every step Alamo takes towards being a leading-edge market role model is a good thing for those that cherish the theater experience. I assume there are folks like that in NY, and those film fans are going to be pretty fucking happy today, as Alamo announces a new theater in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Taking over the historic Metro Theater, the theater will boast five screens along with their typical food/drink service and geek-curated revival programming. The full press release is below.

Just last month I spent something like 60 hours in several of the Austin Drafthouses across the course of a week for SXSW. There’s something very soul-soothing about every film being led by a giant, block-letter warning that puts into crystal clear language just how serious they are about the theater experience. Paired with attention to technical detail, good food, awesome per-show video curating, and great atmosphere… there’s just no better theater experience.

What makes me happiest is that I also visited the most recently completed Drafthouse theater, the Slaughter location in Austin. If that theater — which is a gorgeous combination of the traditional cineplex and a geek-pandering fantasy theater — is the Drafthouse’s vision of how to shape the theater experience, then please let them succeed so that Regal, AMC, and all the rest can take notice.

This new expansion of course joins the announced San Francisco location.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE GOES TO NEW YORK!

First Alamo Location In New York City Slated For Upper West Side

Austin, TX— Thursday, April 5, 2012—Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is pleased to unveil its plans for its first location in New York.  The five-screen Manhattan-area theater will be owned and operated by Alamo Drafthouse and located on the Upper West Side, occupying the former Metro Theater at 2626 Broadway.

“My often-stated top priority for the Alamo Drafthouse has been to open a venue in New York,” said Alamo founder and CEO Tim League.  “When we discovered the availability of the historic Metro theater, we immediately knew we had found the perfect location for our new Manhattan home.”

The venue will feature five screens of new releases, repertory programming and the Alamo’s unique signature programming.  Like all Alamo Drafthouse theaters, the Alamo Drafthouse at the Metro will provide food and drink service to your seat and will uphold its famously strict no-talking policy.  The new theater is currently scheduled to open in 2013.

Alamo Drafthouse is now accepting applications for managers, kitchen staff, creative programmers, bartenders and waiters for the upcoming Manhattan theater.  Employment applications can be downloaded at www.drafthouse.com/about/employment
