Helped me? Ohh...Wendy & Lisa's Staring At The Sun, Angela Bofill's I Try, Radiohead's entire Kid A...and on and on. LOL
I wonder if other films within this genre are as tapped why music lovers are so passionate about certain songs. I loved the story behind the silent pause and how it took on a life of its own in the record store and how much mythology plays into it all. If these are standard troops within the genre, I think I might love the film less. Therefore, I think I won't seek other films out. LOL

I had an entire paragraph dedicated to the fact that this film existed in that genre. There needs to be more like that. What song helped you?

Oh, real quick: In researching the film I found out its part of a "song saves the world" sub genre of films. Anyone familiar with this?

As a card carrying member of the crazy "music saved my life" cult---this movie spoke to me. Just like others, I was leery of where this beast was going during the first 1/3 of the film but once it picked up got deeper and deeper I was in heaven. A truly great film and I might even dare to say one of my all time favs now.

Having just moments ago wrapped this up, I've gotta say that your opening paragraph pretty much describes how I feel about this film to a T. Sometimes I laughed, sometimes I wondered where it was going, and for the first half or so I was getting the feeling that this thing had been significantly overhyped. But then it started to just wrap up so well at the end, I really couldn't help but smile. Definitely one of those movies that projects a sense of upbeat love onto the watcher, and one I'm happy I found.

Now, to find a way to force this onto everyone else...

I was wondering where you were! While I've avoided reading the column until after I watch the movie tomorrow (no more putting it off! School's out, so time to get down and serious about these movies), but like the others have said, I really do hope you're feeling better. Happy, healthy thoughts!

So sorry to hear you're ill. Glad the movie lifted your spirits (as it did mine when I first saw it). I like the comparison to Magnolia (one of my all-time favorites), though I don't quite understand your claim of "clinical distance"; everything I've ever read about the film spoke of how personal it was for the filmmaker, and I'm inclined to agree.
Also, again, totally with you about Ink's climax. Whatever problems I had with the rest of the film ceased to matter as soon as the dad woke up in the hospital.
I know you tend to focus on streaming movies, but I find myself more enthralled by the various TV shows on Netflix, especially Doctor Who and, starting today, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes, FilmCriticHulk holds much sway over my viewing decisions). Great stuff.
Anyways, feel better soon.
