You know, I just went back and watched AVP for the first time in forever after seeing Prometheus, and I was struck by the many similarities in their plots. It's actually grown in my estimation, too; I hated it on first viewing, but at least it knows it's stupid, unlike Prometheus. I'd probably rank it alongside Aliens at this point, since that was ruined by the director's cut, and I'm coming to loathe Cameron in my old age. It's definitely the second best movie featuring Predators, but that's faint praise.

your analysis is spot on...too many questions with answers that have no real weight based on the material presented. Damon was on Spoilers(Kevin Smith) and was like "I like all the criticizms, they are valid, and it makes me want to do better". WTF?!?! He also said the original script focused on facehuggers and xenomorphs, but I don't think he changed it for the better. It really should have been its own movie. The reveal at the end was just retarded. This is probably the most polished turd I have ever seen. I can't remember the last time I left a theater and was like "this was cool, but why did they do this?" and "what does that even mean?" and "where did those other guys go after that guy was being burned" and.......so many questions...none of them leading anywhere good.

Also, my favorite part of Prometheus...the return of "space basketball". David(Fassbender) will fucking crush you in a game of H.O.R.S.E.

I always thought they concentrated to much on Ripley.......the Aliens are the star. An more interesting. Ive read all the comics and the books based on Aliens and there is so much material that would make amazing films without all the baggage of Ripley. Just the trilogy where the aliens get to earth through alien worshipping cults, crazy general trys to trains as weapon which ultimatly fails when he tries to retake earth and ripley joining the main characters to go to the alien homeworld to capture the queen of queens so they can take her to earth and nuke all the aliens in one go. Would be awesome. Also you have the red aliens, who are like the normal aliens but red....like ants i guess. The use of alien queen royal jelly as a drug or steriod. So many different stories to look into the aliens themselves, but this is never done because they feel Ripley is the centre of the franchise. Such a waste.

Re "best line":

"We made you because we could."

Bullshit. We made androids to perform specific functions, like going on hazardous missions in place of human beings (as David should be doing in this movie). So I don't see this is a good line ... just another glib, vacuous line in a glib, vacuous movie.

I didn't see this as an explanation of where the xenomorphs came from any more than "This race of Engineers made them, but they also made this other stuff." I think of the ship from Alien as a bomber, probably shot down in some ancient war millions of years ago. The xenomorphs are weapons. The common style in creations just shows that the creators were of the same culture. I liked Prometheus more than most, but I dug the Lovecraftian aspects, which includes weak characters and meandering story. The atmosphere was there, though, and that was what Lovecraft did well.

I still think you guys are missing the point. This is not a prequel! This is more of a sidequel( to take a term applied to the film Soldier). This film is not meant to serve as a prequel but instead as a film set in the same universe. If the film is viewed that way it makes alot more sense and can be better appreciated. Lindelof's script is fine, if you view David is the main character then the narrative makes alot more sense. Such as: he put the organism in the drink to destroy humanity, not for Weyland, especially if you view his dialogue before that.

I figure the Prometheus gets all the state of the art technology because it's primarily an exploration vessel, and as said earlier Vickers mentions the whole operation being very expensive and Weyland is obsessed with this particular operation. Then you have the Nostromo, which is basically a cargo vessel, so basic technology like tactile buttons and monitors is all that the crew requires to carry cargo from one place to another.

I'd suggest covering the Burton/Schumacher cycle in its entirety, while including samples from the two earlier incarnations of the character, i.e. the '60's movie and MASK OF THE PHANTASM. (The rest of the animated movies were released straight to video/DVD, so they could be glossed over on those grounds.) Then conclude with the Nolan trilogy.

That, I think, would be a pretty hefty and satisfying body of work, encompassing the most popular cinematic incarnations of the character while also bypassing the risk of burning yourself out by gorging on the animated series, the DTV movies, the '60's show, the classic serials, etc.

Josh, you pretty much hit the nail on the head here, and considering how hilariously puny the "What Works" column is compared to "What Doesn't Work", not much more needs to be said.

My personal biggest problems with PROMETHEUS are the Engineers/Space Jockeys themselves. In ALIEN, Dallas remarked how the remains of the space jockey appeared fossilized, a process that normally takes thousands to millions of years. The best way they could arguably have gone about making a prequel to ALIEN would be to ditch the human/android characters altogether and focus squarely on the Engineers themselves, setting the story eons in the past (think Mel Gibson's APOCALYPTO with aliens). As it is, we're left with a clunky mess made clunkier by Damon Lindelof's nebulous loosey-goosey storytelling.

Just watched and read the respective franchise me entries for Planet of the Apes two weeks ago. great experience! I sort of did it again for this one though I sure as fuck skipped Resurrection. Great writing man, and excited about Predator. Hope you include the AVP flix. I personally think Predator is a masterpiece- filmaking at its highest quality-, Predator 2 is bad enough to be extremely enjoyable, Anderson´s AVP very, very entertaining and ultimately satisfying, Requiem rather shitty, though never at the same low depths as Resurrection, and Predators instantly forgettable, not even benefitting from Fishburne´s weird part. Loking forward to it

"The original film takes place some time after the events of Prometheus, yet the technology on display in Prometheus greatly surpasses what was possibe in Ripley’s time."

This bugged me at first too, but then I figured that an expensive expedition put together by one of the richest guys on the planet might have shinier tech than a run-down refinery in space. It doesn't totally add up, but I'm willing to give that a pass.

Unlike the rest of the film.

I think you could pull it off if you limited it to theatrically released, full-length films (none of the serials). Then you could start with Batman '66, move through the Burton/Schumacher series with Mask of the Phantasm dropped in, and then wrap it up with Nolan's series. So that would be ... nine films (including TDKR). Bit of an undertaking, and there has been a so much written about these films already. Even still, you know I'd be reading the shit out of a Batman Franchise Me.

I think the solution is to treat each iteration as its own franchise.

For instance, Batman / Batman Returns / Batman Forever / Batman and Robin are clearly meant to exist in one universe. So that's one franchise - call it the "Burton/Schumacher-verse" - whereas Batman Begins / The Dark Knight / The Dark Knight Rises are a different franchise. Still Batman, but obviously has nothing to do with Burton/Schumacher.

You could also do the animated movies as a third franchise, I guess, but after 7 movies I'm guessing you'd be pretty burnt on Batman for a while.

Anyway: great article on Prometheus. I enjoy this column quite a bit.

<em>Why does Vickers have an automated medical suite in her room that turns out to only be programmed for male anatomy? Was it for Weyland? </em>
When Shaw first sees the medpod she specifically exposits to the audience that it is used for bypass surgery. We are also told it is for a man. Most people requiring bypass surgery are old...therefore this rare super-expensive medpod is intended for an old man. It's pretty strongly hinted at. Also, the first thing Vickers asks when she is revived from stasis was if anybody died during the journey - so as an audience should we not be expecting an old man close to death being on board?
<em>Such as hiding Weyland on the ship. Why?</em>
If nothing is found on the planet, Weyland wouldn't be revived from stasis. Weyland certainly wouldn't want it to get out to the rest of civilization that he unilaterally decided to make first contact with "God" and spent a trillion dollars to do so, and it proved to be folly.

Great write-up(s), Josh. This is one addition to the CHUD oeuvre which I don't like to imagine going without.

That said, one thing that I feel people take for granted regarding <strong>Prometheus</strong> is how it isn't a direct prequel to <strong>Alien</strong> - but rather it is an exploration of another quadrant of the universe/movie-verse. I can understand the outrage of fans to an extent, but when I think about how much more interesting it is to delve into another facet of the lore... I dunno, I feel it makes me appreciate the film even more. <strong>Prometheus</strong> doesn't concern itself with focusing its time on exploring the Xenomorph, and apart from fan expectations to the contrary it shouldn't have any reason to. It's opening up dark corners of the bigger picture we didn't know about, and I think that is worth more than we give it credit.

We all love the <strong>Alien</strong> franchise, but we've spent a lot of time - perhaps (as this retrospective seems to indicate) too much time - with the Xenomorph tangent. I'm in no way trying to be insulting, but I wish fans could step back and see how refreshing an opportunity we've been given with this film. Ridley Scott isn't so much saying "fuck you" to the films that came afterwards, so much as he is taking our blinders off of the monster we've had plenty of time to familiarize ourselves with. He's presenting not simply a universe with a scary monster, but a universe that is <em>itself</em> scary, unreasonable, and hostile. From a narrative sense, that's much more satisfying/interesting/worth exploring.
