The Nutshell

The Lowdown

Mr. Bean's Holiday is for children and if there is an adult out there that finds this movie remotely funny please do us all a favor and head for an island where the natives will look at you licking their lips anticipating how your legs and arms will taste. I tried to give this movie a fair shake despite all the negative feedback I had been reading online and as hard as I tried, this movie is just plain awful. The only redeeming quality is a brief cameo by Willem Dafoe who is attending the Cannes Film Festival talking to reporters next to his female co-star and he forgets her name. Other than that there is absolutely nothing in this entire movie that rises above a groan.

Rowan Atkinson makes Mr. Bean a likable person but beyond that his comedic routines fall flat. A three year old might chuckle at the faces Rowan makes throughout and might laugh at some mishaps but that is it. Even adding the little boy lost story angle is a waste because it is stupid. It pains me to write up a negative review for a movie but with the material presented in this film I am left with no choice. I get it that Rowan is wanting to convey a nice simplistic guy who is naive about the world who gets into situations by accident, but the problem is that Rowan just comes across as a buffoon you want to see locked up and the key thrown away.

The sight gag throughout the film is a video camera Bean also won in the raffle and even that gag falls flat as it just mainly shows Bean filming himself making faces. A child may laugh or scream out of fear at the ugly faces Bean makes and as for me I just sat there and one would have thought I'd just taken two vicodins.

Even the story of the little boy lost and Bean doing whatever he can to help get the boy to Cannes to reunite with his father is not even a cute story let alone a funny one. The boy for the entire movie just sat there with a blank stare on his face and I'd say the actor was probably reeling in pain over having to sit across from Akinson and watch him make those horrible faces.

Mr. Bean's Holiday is a movie that should be avoided at all costs.

The Package

The extras are just as unfunny as the movie. The deleted scenes are unfunny along with the other extras that spotlight Mr. Bean and Akinson.
