WARNER BROS, LET MY TRICK R TREAT GO

Tonight Aint It Cool News sponsored a screening of Michael Dougherty's Trick R Treat for a crowd that wasn't just capacity but overflow, where hundreds of people had to be turned away at the door. This amount of interest comes because the film has been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years now, despite tons of positive word and buzz. Warner Bros spent 12 million dollars on the film and seem unwilling to release it.That is a sin. I am going to do a real review of the movie next week (for Halloween, of course), but I'll tell you now that Dougherty, probably best known as a writer on X2 and Superman Returns, is a terrific director. He's made a movie that's fun, gory, scary and a blast to sit through, especially with an enthusiastic audience. He got every dime of that 12 million on screen in the form of a great ensemble cast, wonderful practical effects and more than a little bit of beautiful cinematography. He's made a movie that felt to me like a connecting point between Creepshow and Gremlins, where the horror films of the 80s meet the Amblin fantasy movies, the little bit of nightmare on the edge of childhood.
The bummer is that I should have been at a screening of Trick R Treat 2 tonight; after the screening Dougherty told me that his vision was to have one of these a year, bringing different directors on board to bring their own vision to the material while still playing in the same universe. I'd like to visit the alternate universe where that happened. Instead, the film has been relegated to the studio vault and the occasional film festival screening.
What happened? Dougherty tries to answer that question as nicely as possible - after all, he's still hoping to get Warner Bros to release the film - but it seems to me like a classic case of a movie being too original. It's not that Trick R Treat is redefining the genre or something, it's that the movie doesn't fit in the mold of what the studios see as successful. It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. It's not a rip off of another popular movie. And when faced with something that's not an easy sell, the studios often balk.
The other problem is Saw. At some point in the last five years, the month of October was essentially ceded to Saw, at least when it comes to horror movies. Trick R Treat needs an October date, but if the studios see Saw as supreme - when in fact the series is winding down and only getting the Halloween dollars by default - they don't want to risk going against the reigning champ. I think that Trick R Treat could have been a Saw killer, but we'll never know.
At this point I just want this movie to hit theaters. It's a theatrical film, one that looks great on a big screen. It doesn't deserve to be relegated to your home theater. Especially because your home theater doesn't come with hundreds of people who jump at the good scares or clap at the great reveals. Trick R Treat is a movie that really works as a communal experience.
Look for my full review of the film next week, but in the meantime, if you happen to run into a Warner Bros executive, ask them when you're going to be able to see the best horror movie never released.

I was at that screening as well and this review is spot on. OH MY GOD, does this movie need to be released. It's like finding the fountain of youth, and when you run into a sick old dying person, you have no way of telling them where to find it themselves.
As a horror fan, and one of the "fun horror films of the 80's" as Dougherty described, this movie is already a top 5 classic in my book.
RELEASE THIS MOVIE!

Saw this at BNAT 9. It is a great flipping film. I hate gore flicks but I loved this movie. They really really need to release it. It would make a flipping fortune. What I don't get is Black Christmas and Prom Night get released but a genuinely good horror film doesn't?

Someone just pissed the wrong person off and got it their movie shelved because the studio system is filled with fickle little bitches. The same thing happened with Midnight Meat Train. It's a shame.

Can someone make a fucking film of The Rising already?

@ JWB, you've hit the nail on the head. I was going to suggest that part of the reason it got shelved was due to the box office 'performance' (read: shitty) of "Superman Returns". Lionsgate and "Midnight Meat Train" was a damn shame -- released to 100 2nd run screens but sending "Disaster Movie" to 2000+ 1st run screens.

I've been dying to see this movie, but I however DON'T want it to be released to theaters, I would rather it go right to DVD. In fact, I want every horror movie to go right to DVD, no matter how good it is. Simply because movie going audiences, especially horror movie going audiences, have become absolute monsters. I'd rather enjoy a movie and hear what was going on, instead of people talking loudly on their cell phones and other people yelling out "YO THIS IS STUPID" every five minutes. Shut UP, for crying out loud.

I have to agree with Teribble Cake unfortunately, Philadelphia is NOT the place to see any movie that would draw a younger crowd, so that essentially rules out horror films. It's a shame, even the Ritz independent theaters seem to fall prey to Cake's laments.
Regardless, let's just see this thing in some fucking form or another already

I just want to see Brian Cox playing John Carpenter. But good old Warner Bros., they gave us Rest Stop 2. Thank Christ.

Its hard to shit on WB for not giving us this movie when they are giving us a crazy looking WATCHMEN movie with all the bells and whistles. I'm going with the theory that someone involved in the production pissed off someone at WB and they are holding it back because they are being a petty, jealous douche.

I was one of the people who had to be turned away at the door of the NYC Screening that I won tix to, thru CHUD of course, back in like August/Sept. There were just no seats left. Dylan Baker and James Marsden (?) were there. It was the saddest I've been in quite some time. The film looks fantastic, can't wait to see in some form.

Seriously, sometimes the injustice of it all drives me fucking bonkers. If it isn't idiotic audiences who don't appreciate good film it is fucktard studios sabotaging their own product. Now that this same trend has started to ruin gaming as well, it may be time to go Amish.

Maybe if Slither would've made some money, this sort of film could get a proper release. Why not straight to video, at least?

Yeah, but it seems to me like a clear cut case of Midnight Meat Trainitis, so to speak...i.e. some execs at Warner got their feeling hurt by Dougherty and/or Singer and is trying (and succeeding) to bury the movie.
I know that horror anthology are thought of as a hard sell in Hollywood, but come on...This is a movie starring an Oscar winner, Paquin, who was also part of a hugely successful super hero franchise, X Men, and is currently the star of a show, True Blood, that not only is both horror and unusual, but it's also a hit with critics and audiences and just got renewed. Plus there's Brian Cox...And the movie budget was $12M. All this without even mentioning the great buzz around it that's been building in the last 2 years. I really smell something fishy about this whole situation and it really sucks.

Hate to feel this way because I know the hard work and effort that went into it, and would gladly buy the dvd or go to the theatre to see it, but it would be nice if some screeners of this got out in the meantime, cause that's all we got to look forward to at this point.
