Director Greg Yaitanes confirmed via Twitter that the entire [H]ouse sixth season finale was shot using Canon’s 5D Mk II.
The Canon 5D is a professional-level DSLR camera that also shoots 1920×1080 HD video to a
35mm-sized 21.1 megapixel sensor. It costs around $3500 for the body and a decent lens, and has become the B-camera staple of forward thinking cinematographers throughout the film and television industry. Shane Hurlbut, ASC (Terminator: Salvation) and Rodney Charters, ASC (24)
are two of the camera’s biggest supporters, and Charters even tweeted
about shooting season nine of 24 entirely with the 5D before it got
cancelled. Also, SNL‘s new title sequence was shot with the 5D and the Canon 7D.

This is kind of a big deal because for the past six seasons, [H]ouse was shot in Super35. Next to anamorphic, you can’t get more detail out of a standard-sized film format. This just goes to show what kind of faith Yaitanes and cinematographer Gale Tattersall have in the digital camera.

A lot of people thought the RED would revolutionize the film industry
allowing filmmakers with small budgets to give their films a big-budget
look. What RED did was pave the way for serious film-style digital cameras.
Canon surprised everyone (including themselves) with the diminutive but
impressive (and affordable!) 5D. It just goes to show that revolutions like this are hard to plan, but if you
needed any further proof of the democratization of the film industry,
this is it.
