Yeah, that's a Romero creation to. There was a deleted scene from Land where someone who hanged themselves came back as a zombie.

Romero did the whole zombies-eat-horses thing before this show. I can't remember if they did that in the comic though. I agree with the logistical issues though. It'll be interesting to see whether or not they address that.
