ZODIAC Director's Cut Due in 2008

From the folks over at Slashfilm:

Quote:
Zodiac will hit DVD store shelves on July 24th, but you might want to consider holding off on that purchase. Aside from the fact that the studio is releasing the film bare-bones (aka next to no extra features), there is now something new to consider. Apparently David Fincher’s Zodiac: 2-Disc Director’s Cut will be arriving in 2008.

And of course, this new release will be packed with special features missing from the single disc version, including an audio commentary by David Fincher, actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer and crime novelist James Ellroy, extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing the production from start to finish, and an in-depth look at the actual Zodiac crimes, including all-new interviews with the original investigators and survivors.
I think we all knew this was coming, but it's nice to have a formal announcement before the bare bones edition comes out. I think this was the best film of the year so far, so holding out till 2008 to own this sucker is going to pain me.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll make space for this on my "To Buy" list.

Looks like I'll be renting this on Netflix while waiting for the Director's Cut. I'd love to hear that commentary track with Fincher and RDJ.

The bare bones edition will be priced at around $10 by October, so I'll just pick it up then. Sounds like a great special edition. Any guess as to what the running time might be?
there is supposed to be a 30 second promo for the special edition on the bare bones edition
post #6 of 37
Fincher's DVDs have the greatest audio commentaries. But this sounds too good to be true.

Loved Zodiac. Might be the best movie of the year so far, in my opinion. However, is this something that really needs to be a whole lot longer?
Hey, if the "directors cut" includes the three-minute plus sequence where the passage of time is marked by the popular songs of the day as if they were played on the radio against a black screen (yeah, that made sense), I'd be there. But since Zodiac is the one to beat for 2007 for me, I'm getting the barebones anyway.

"Too bad you bought the shitty version! Here's what a smarter consumer would've gotten..."

Thanks for the heads up, Supremo.

Same here. I loved that movie too damn much to wait until 2008 to get it on DVD.

I'm trying to hold off until the DC next year but it's proving difficult. I'm definitely renting it, though.

i will buy the bare bones and the special edition...this, for me, is by miles and miles and miles the best film of the year

Full tech specs and bonus slates have yet to be announced, but we’ll let you know when more info comes in. SRP for each high-def title is $29.95.

This is the bare bones version, I'm assuming.

I may just pick up the bare bones release, or I'll rent it. Next week though, I'll be seeing the movie regardless. This Director's Cut is great news.

Yeah, I'm gonna go pick it up today on my way home today. I know a few places that sell things early.

I was just going to hold out until September for the HD version... now this? My luck the DC will never see the light of day on HD-DVD.

From the ever-reliable Wikipedia:

Quote:
According to the David Prior, producer of the upcoming special edition, the bare bones edition "was only reluctantly agreed to by Fincher because I needed more time on the bonus material. The studio was locked into their release date (and bound and determined to release a single-disc, which nobody except them wanted), so Fincher allowed that to be released first. It had nothing to do with Fincher 'double dipping his own movie before it even makes it to stores' and everything to do with buying more time for the special edition."[37] He stated that the theatrical cut will only be available on the single disc edition. Prior elaborated further: "Nobody wants fans feeling like they're being taken advantage of, and I know that double-dipping creates that impression. That's why it was so important to me that consumers be told there was another version coming. In this case it really was a rock-and-a-hard place situation, and delaying the second release was done strictly for the benefit of the final product...But this is a very ambitious project, easily the most far-reaching I've ever worked on, and owing largely to studio snafus that I can't really elaborate on, I didn't have enough time to do it properly. Thus Fincher bought me the extra time by agreeing to a staggered release, which I'm very grateful for."

Yep, I'll definitely be waiting for the Director's Cut.

I'll agree that Zodiac was certainly one of the best films I've seen in theaters so far this year.

There’s been a lot of scurrying about concerning release dates for the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD releases of David Fincher’s Zodiac, and here’s another: the high definition release has been postponed indefinitely. It sounds like the studio is incorporating more bonus features – and perhaps the HD discs will offer the director’s cut found on the DVD to be released early next year – but we have no confirmation on anything yet. We’ll keep you updated.

That's good news. I'd rather have an HD version that has the director's cut and whatever special features are planned for it.
Ditto. I still hate waiting for it though.

More specs have been made available for Paramount’s 8 January release of Zodiac: The Director’s Cut. This disc will have a 162-minute version with two commentary tracks – one with director David Fincher, the other with stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr. and producers Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and James Ellroy – ten featurettes, some sequence breakdowns, trailers, and TV spots. Also appearing day-and-date with this release is an HD DVD edition, but there’s no news yet whether it’ll have any exclusive high-def features. The DVD will retail for $29.98; the HD DVD version will have an SRP of $39.98

Man, the "This Is The Zodiac Speaking" feature on disc 2 starts slowly, but when you get to the survivors, it's just chilling. The mess of a man that used to be Michael Mageau is absolutely heartbreaking. He's just irretrievably unraveled by his experience. Guy can't get two details the same twice. "It was a small car...maybe it was a Cadillac...I laid there for about 4 hours....maybe it was nine hours..." Killed me.

I was doing odd and end things around my apartment while "This is the Zodiac Speaking" was on but stopped everything when he was on the screen. I just couldn't stop thinking what he would be like if Zodiac never crossed his path. I felt a little shook-up after his interview and watched the rest of the documentary with no interruption. Really, really good stuff.

The interview that creeped me out was the dispatcher's chilling recollection of receiving that Zodiac phone call: "Goodbyeeeeeeeee . . ."

Things take a turn in the "San Francisco" section of the piece, where you see real footage of Toschi and Armstrong, as well as Captain Lee and Melvin Belli's televised phone conversation with someone claiming to be Zodiac. It's some great archival material, and I wanted more.

The most compelling part here for me is the interview with a 70-something policeman who may or may not have seen the killer moments after the cab driver Paul Stine was killed. If he did see him, he saw him walk into an apartment, and gives the address! But what lingers is the tragic need the man has to clear his name of any bad policework that night. Like Mageau, we've a front-row seat to just how many lives these killings affected, and how. The somewhat pathetic sight of a senior citizen trying to show you how he remembers every last detail, cross-cut with a conflicting report from another policeman, might be laughed off, but to me it was tinged with a profound sadness.

You nailed it. I think Fincher appreciates this aspect of "The Serial Killer Film" more than most. I was watching Seven the other day, and I found my self wondering how Leland Orser (sp) would ever have a normal sexual relationship again. It's interesting that a lot of these slasher films never really delve into the aftermath of the people caught up in these types of crimes. For example, consider what it would be like as a parent, finding out that your daughter spent her last days as a guest of the Firefly family. To be honest, now that I'm a little older, that's why I don't appreciate slasher flicks as much as I used to. They seem...too neat for reality.

Here's a montage of many of the film's cgi composite shots (spoilers if you haven't seen the film). Mind-blowing.
Wow, I had no idea half of those shots were digital. I just thought they did some wonderful location shooting...

Wow. Just fucking wow.
