AMC's Mad Men

Anyone checking this out tonight? It's from Sopranos exec-producer Matthew Weiner about (copied from AICN) about sexist, anti-Semite ad men in 1960 Manhattan trying to market, among other things, Lucky Strikes cigarettes. It stars Jon Hamm (“Providence”), Elisabeth Moss (“The West Wing”), Vincent Kartheiser (“Angel”), Christina Hendricks (“Firefly”), January Jones (“We Are Marshall”) and John Slattery (“Ed”). Starts at 10 tonight.

I've been pretty disappointed in Rescue Me so far (I would've dropped it by now if it was airing in the fall), so the only other show I'm watching right now is Burn Notice, which airs the same time this does.

Herc at AICN did the usual round up of reviews from newspapers all around the country, and they seemed to give it pretty high reviews. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33376

It's only 13 episodes, so I'll give it a couple of episodes to grow on me....

I'm on board this one for sure.

TiVo is all set for it

The one thing that I've heard about the series and I liked the idea of is that each incoming season (If the show gets renewed) will advance the characters and agency two years. Meaning if there's a second season, it would be set in '62, leading to some interesting possibilities if the show lasts for a while.

Looking forward to this tonight. Thanks for starting the thread, Wayden. I guess nobody else was paying attention to this show.

Oh, wait.

Really, really great pilot. While it might lean a little too heavily on the un-PC nature of the time, the period details were beyond fantastic. And the end "twist" (kind of how I perceived it), was handled spectacularly. Can't wait for more.

Damn. I used the search function, too. Guess I didn't go back far enough...

I thought it was good, but not great. It was a little too "cute" with some stuff, like the "machine that copies papers" not existing, the Nixon comment, and all of the board members coughing all at once.

But it is an interesting premise, and I'll give it a couple more episodes to find its footing...

Good pilot. I really liked it. Good performance by the lead, who looks a lot like a young De Niro, I think.

Weird seeing Zoey from West Wing, though.

No big deal, WayDen. Just keeping you on your toes.

I'm going to have to watch a few more episodes before I pass judgement on this one. The opening credits, production design, and attention to period detail for this show is top notch. But the characters didn't leave much of an impression.

Would this show even be on anyone's radar if it wasn't for the fact that Weiner used to work on The Sopranos?
I didn't even know Weiner was involved when I watched it.
I didn't either. I was pretty much locked in by the first ad that I saw.

The ending seemed almost too much. I assume that quite a bit of research went into this show (based on the look, it sure seems like it), but it was still hard to believe. The sexual harassment, smoking, & drinking I completely buy, but for some reason, I had trouble with the shrink revealing the session to her husband.

I found the little factoids in between every commercial a nice little touch. Nothing huge, but kinda cool...

I wouldn't mind them if they popped up on the screen as I was fast-forwarding; I kept stopping thinking I was missing something important.

This is a good show, but I wish it "popped" dramatically a little more often, especially considering it was created by a Sopranos alum.

I'm beginning to lose interest because of the pacing.

The period details and production design are amazing though.
Why aren't more people watching this? So good.

And this arc with Vincent Kartheiser is brilliant.

I'm with you. The show lost me after the second episode, despite the amazing production design. Normally I give something a little more time to grab me, but it's summer and I'm too lazy to commit to something that runs at this pace.

When I read the synopsis before Thursday night's episode and saw that part of it was going to focus on Pete (Kartheiser) some more, I decided to tune out. I didn't like his character from the first time he appeared onscreen.

His character actually gets his ass handed to him, which is nice. I'm not a big fan of his character either.

You should catch the episode. It was really good.

I checked this show out not really knowing what to expect and was surprised at how smart it comes across despite some minor flaws. The lead actor Jon Hamm is excellent, the supporting cast is great too but I have trouble keeping track of all their names. Also, who's the hot red head with the great rack?

Christina Hendricks. If you've seen Firefly, she played Saffron, the hot redhead con artist with the great rack.

"It's like watching a dog play the piano."

Possibly the most sexist thing I've ever heard, but I'll be damned if I didn't laugh my ass off...
Seriously, I heard that and I just let out a "holy shit" while chuckling to myself.
I'm watching but I can't really say that I like the show. Everything is really top notch in my opinion but it just isn't connecting with me.
I've been watching this show with a passive interest. It looks great but I wasn't sure what it was really about at its core. Something deeper seemed possible but it was slow to rear its head. After the latest episode, the semi-brilliant "Hobo Code," what the show is after is quite apparent. And wonderful. So I'm cautiously in love with this show now. We'll see where they take us and if they can fulfill the potential.
This show is consistent every single week. It's a little slow to get to the point, but the payoffs along the way are really great.
Very true. And I, personally, just enjoy watching these people go about their lives. This is a world that I have never seen in such detail and depicted with as much honesty, and I'm basking in it. It's all very fascinating to me.
The show has just been renewed for a second season.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with this show till I saw the episode where they had to take the stairs and had just finished eating several pounds of oysters.

Fantastic! I'm loving this show more & more with every episode. Last night's was great - I wouldn't be surprised to see Jon Hamm & John Slattery start to get more film work in the near future...

thanx, now I remember that rack(runs out to Wal-mart to buy Firefly)

I stopped watching at te end of August. Can someone fill me in on what happened. I really had no idea what the show was building to.

Fan-fucking-tastic.
So. The dryer scene with Draper's wife made me feel pretty good.
What, did everyone stop watching this or something? Is AMC just off-putting? I don't get it.
I'm still watching it, and loving it more with every episode.
the cast is superb
that and the production values make it worth watching alone
post #37 of 49
I'm still watching. I can't believe the season is almost over.

The last episode had me worried, but I have to say I love the way that Cooper handled the Pete Vs. Don situation.
Who cares?

pete should be fired after that.
What a brilliant finale. The people who stopped watching this should punch themselves in the crotch.

It was fantastic - but that was no surprise. Every episode has been pretty great. Loved it when she found out about her husband calling the shrink.

I've heard of instances of it happening in real life (usually when the woman is extremely overweight), but it never ceases to amaze me how a woman doesn't know she's pregnant.

And there aren't a lot of shows that could pull that twist off either. But this does because Weiner clearly planned this for a while instead of simply throwing it out there. And that's why the show is so brilliant.
it was fantastic
i mean, i don´t think any of us saw it coming!

The Kodak pitch was brutal, almost dropped a few tears there.

Let´s see how they top that next season!
Just an FYI -- AMC started rerunning this from the first episode last night. Sundays at midnight. I'd missed the first go-round, but I predictably loved it. So great.
Good man!!
The show can certainly lay claim to the best show on television. Rewatching every episode makes me love it even more.
Bought the first season off iTunes for a long roadtrip I was taking* despite already having watched it like twice through. Yeah, it's great.

*I wasn't driving - relax.
I need to catch up on this; I've missed a couple of episodes and DVR'd the rest.
Just making my mark on this thread in order to read it later. I just started the first season.
I am so unbelievably behind on this show. I've seen the first episode of the second season and none after.

Still, my love for it is enough that when I saw Stephen King call it "soap opera with a retro feel" in the latest EW while praising Prison Break, I wanted to beat him with the magazine, Bourne style.
