Holy Crap! this is actually a decent list.

They put Faith No More's "Easy" in the top 10. That's awesome in my opinion.

I'm also a fan of the Postal Service's Against All Odds cover too.

Here is the top ten.

01 "Stairway to Heaven" - Dolly Parton (Led Zeppelin)
02 "Baby Got Back" - Jonathan Coulton (Sir Mix-A-Lot)
03 "Hazy Shade of Winter" - The Bangles (Simon and Garfunkel)
04 "Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinead O'Connor (Prince)
05 "Showroom Dummies" - SeƱor Coconut & His Orchestra (Kraftwerk)
06 "Smooth Criminal" - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)
07 "Personal Jesus" - Johnny Cash (Depeche Mode)
08 "Against All Odds" - The Postal Service (Phil Collins)
09 "Easy (Like Sunday Morning)" - Faith No More (The Commodores)
10 "Tainted Love" - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones)

And Here is the full list

what do you think?

I feel no shame in my love for the Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter". That song kicks all kinds of ass.

Oh, and in no universe is Good Charlotte's cover of "I Want Candy" better than Bow Wow Wow's version.

Odd top pick, as I would have put Dolly Parton's "Stairway to Heaven" in the top ten of my 100 WORST covers.

I was under the impression that it was unranked... especially since Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower didn't make the top 10.

It's not terrible, but it's a bit underwhelming.

I like that they managed to go for soem Rachid Taha, but yeah, they missed some glaring stuff such as Hendrix. Johnny Cash's Personal Jesus is good, but Hurt I so much better. It's top 3 material. Not 87th position.

And Spike Marshall posted a video of The Arcade Fire's cover of The Guns of Brixton, which could easily go in this top 10.

I want to edit the title but cant... This is the New York POST not the New York Times. Sorry!!

Christ, Alien Ant Farm? Fuck this list in its list-hole.

Also: Where's Nirvana Unplugged in New York? None of those covers crack the top 100?

I'm partial to their cover of Magnetic Fields' Born on a Train (from their '05 KCRW session), though they've knocked out a ton of really great covers over the years:

-This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
-State Trooper - Bruce Springsteen
-Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It says the list is unranked.

Oh, Bill Murray made the list for "Star Wars". This list isn't all bad.

I read it as a sort of wink to the fact that Stairway is probably the most unanimous choice for BEST SONG EVER.

Love Spit Love's cover of "How Soon Is Now"? Fuck you, list, sir.
"Say Hello Wave Goodbye" by David Gray should have been on there.

Yeah, that's about where I lost interest. There are probably worse covers that got mentioned before it, but I figured they were intentionally including them for the sake of argument. The Love Spit Love cover is so by-the-numbers and bland that it's not even brave or interesting of them to try to sneak it in. This is a list of "songs that happen to be covers," not a list of particularly good or noteworthy covers.

My Chemical Romance's Under Pressure is a soggy abortion left on the driveway on a hot August afternoon. List INVALID!

That piece of shit is there? Jesus, yet another reason not to trust any music reviewer's "Best of" list or list in general.

And no Nirvana "The Man who sold the world"? or "Hurt" by Cash? Yeha, this is a bullshit list.

This list is puke-inducing.

Actually "Hurt" is #87, the list is shit anyway. And Avenged Sevenfold's cover of "Walk" is horrible, how do you fuck that song up?

Yeah, if you're going to try to improve on Queen & Bowie, you're going to have to come up with something better than My Chemical Romance. I agree with DaveB. This is just a list of covers.

Only 87?

How often does a cover make the original song redundant?

Hell, how often does a cover make the originator of the song say "That's not my song anymore. It's his."
Vanilla Fudge's psychadelic rock version of "I Want It That Way" isn't on here. List now INVALID.

Only twice that I can think of; Hurt and All Along the Watchtower. Which are at least on this shitty list.
Weird list. Especially picking, of all the masterful Cash covers, "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. "American IV:When the Man Comes Around" was wall-to-wall covers, of which "Personal Jesus" wasn't even in the top half. "Hurt" should have its slot, or ...

"Thirteen" (Danzig)
"Won't Back Down" (Tom Petty)
"Don't Think Twice It's Alright (Bob Dylan)
"I'm So Lonsesome I Could Cry" (Hank Williams)

The list could go on and on.
I always liked the The Melvins & Hank Williams III's cover of Ramblin' Man (Hank Williams), and Mastodon does a pretty good cover of Emerald (Thin Lizzy) too.

This is, I think, one of the coolest covers I've ever heard.

The NYT list is waaay skewed towards the '00s, too, which is weird. In the '50s-'70s, it was so common place for a song to get rock, country, soul, and folk versions and they leave so many good ones out, there's almost nowhere good to start.

There should be more Byrds and Janice Joplin, etc....most of these songs are just novelty covers (Paul Anka doing Smells like Teen Spirit? WTF???)
