Booze Recomendations

Hello fellow chewers,

I come to you today to ask a question that I think many of you find important if not the most important thing in your lives.

I'd like to have some suggestions for mixed drinks. I'm trying to get out of just drinkin beer and to expand my selections. However I don't want to sucking down whiskey or something so sweet it'll give me diabeetes or diabeetus (whatever you preference).

So if you have suggestions, let me hear them and I'll try and put them to use next saturday night.

Thanks

Mixed drinks are for sorority chicks and metrosexuals who can't decide if they want to go all the way and play for the other team. Actual men stick with standards: Scotch, Vodka, Gin, Whiskey. Ice if you like to abuse the alcohol.

Closest I get to a mixed drink is a (real) Martini. I drink them the way Winston Churchill did. 3 Parts Gin (Bombay Sapphire preferred, Tanqueray if not available) and then glance at a bottle of dry Vermouth from across the room.

Well, since it's summer, my drink of choice if I have to skip beer, wine, or port for that matter, would be a Long Island Iced Tea. It's a mix, and you won't look sissy, at least compared to those pink and blue colored drinks with an umbrella on it, like a Sex on the Beach.

If you do it yourself here's the recipe from Wiki.

One (1) shot of Maker's Mark (although Knob Creek will do in a pinch) and the cola of your choice (Men drink Coke, however) in a rock's glass.

Now you're playing with the big boys.

Yeah I admit, I'm a wuss drinker. *shrug*. I can get a damn good buzz of a three beers. That's how much of an admitted light weight I am.

Compared to some of my co-workers who would mainline Blue Label if they could.

Hmm Maker's Mark, I've always been intrigued by that. Would that be simply Maker's Mark and Coke or is there some other name for it?

Oh yeah, strike Rum out of the list. I never liked the stuff and always gave me a headache.

I'm a big fan of Crown Royal. It's tastes great and is smooth enough to drink straight. Plus you can usually find a fifth for about $17.

I also recommend Grey Goose dirty martinis.

And as far as low-cal girly drinks, try mixing diet Dr.Pepper with Stoli Vanilla.

Gotta rock the vodka gimlet!
A couple years back, a friend of mine who knew of my distaste for all liquors Russian ordered me a vodka and coke to gross me out. It tastes just like a diet coke, though, and I still order them when I hit the bars before I'm fully recovered from last night's dalliances.

That'll do, Hocken, that'll do.

(In other words, yes, just ask for a Maker's Mark and Coke)
Crown and Coke or a Seven and Seven should suit your needs. Neither of these drinks will make your dick shrivel up and turn into a vagina, and if you mix 'em right they get the job done with a quickness.

edit to amed: never under any circumstances order a "Crown and diet" or "Jack and diet," or anything and diet for that matter.

Gin and Tonic with a twist of lime is pretty damn good. Very refreshing in the summer.

What he said, although I'm a lil' more liberal about the bourbon I use (Mattioli's work damned fine, but I like jack Daniel's in all its variants, the Single Barrel being a particular favorite).

In the privacy of your own home, to avoid the inevitable ridicule, you may want to try Bourbon & Dr. Pepper. Maybe it's because they both originate in the South, but there's something uncanny about how these two things mix.

If you're in a Mexican themed place, you can always get away w/ a frozen margarita & not look like you need to be in a skirt. I like the flavor of tequila (Wyatt's Wild Tequila is a favorite, but hard to find beer I used to love), so I like a good margarita now & then.

Bookers or Maker's or stop drinking.
Maker's Mark is the best whisky mixer
Woodford Reserve or Bulleit is the best to have on the rocks or straight or with a cigar
Licor 43 is the best after dinner drink
If you live outside the states, Sheridan's is a fine creamy treat
Myer's Dark Rum is genius

For beers:

Boddington, Tetley, Newcastle, or Guinness
Sweetwater Blue

I'm partial to Absolute SCREWDRIVERS (also a good way to fight scurvy) and GUINNESS (or Harp).

But my wife's a fan of Whiskey Sours, Toasted Almonds, and Mojitos, if you're feeling extra girly.

Or you can give the bartender your balls in exchange for an apple-tini.

You want a real drink? Try a Vesper. It was created in the book Casino Royale and is a real fuckin drink - no mixers.

Vesper
Type: Cocktail
Primary alcohol by volume: Gin
Vodka

Served: "Straight up"; without ice
Standard garnish: lemon peel
Standard drinkware: Deep Champagne goblet
Commonly used ingredients: Six parts Gordon's Gin
Two parts vodka
One part Kina Lillet

Preparation: Shake over ice until well chilled, then strain into a deep goblet and garnish with a thin slice of lemon peel.
Cocktail glasses are commonly used instead of Champagne goblets in modern versions of this drink.

I found some Lillet at a great liquor store near me, and this drink truly shows off the real men. Like Bond.

For a fun night out, ask the bartender for a Chocolate Rain. I'll leave the results a surprise for those who want to experience its greatness.

For bonus points, ask the bartender to read The Things They Carried aloud while he prepares your drink.

Stick to a single liquor and a mixer, unless you plan on getting ripped. Personally, I prefer a good vodka or rum to whiskey, though a good whiskey is certainly tough to beat. Every so often I'll get a martini if I want to feel refined.

Amen. Maker's and Coke (don't you dare order it with a Diet Coke or may Xenu smite you down) is the only drink you need. I used to drink Beam in college like it was water. When I actually began earning more than minmum wage I immediately moved up to Maker's. You can find it almost anywhere, it's priced well, and it is very smooth. Mattioli's right in that Knob is a good stand-in for Maker's. And if Maker's isn't your style give Crown Royal a shot like BRasky and Zapp mentioned.

Personally I despise clear liquors and only drink Vodka with Bloody Mary's. Rum is for whores and sissies.

No dice on that one, no way in hell.

Although Werbal, does that explain why you don't have a stomach anymore?

I love mixed drinks. Fuck you.

Anyway, here's what I usually make for people that always gets an approval from them:

1 part Bacardi Limon Rum and 1 part Cosmopolitan mix. Shake. Serve over ice.

and

1 part Bacardi Peach Red Rum and 1 part Cosmopolitan mix. Shake. Serve over ice.

I also ended up making a chocolate martini one day I was desperate for booze and the only mixable things I had were Svedka vodka and Godiva liqueur.

While I usually make mixed drinks for people and enjoy them myself once in a while I'm rather partial to simple Gin and Vodka martinis. Or cognac when I want to drink now but get smashed 40 minutes later.

Peruvian Pisco. Straight.

Thank me later.

(Or if you're not partial to sucking on the lit end of the space shuttle, you can get the same liquor in the form of a Pisco Sour. Again, make sure it's Peruvian.)

(By the way, not every bar stocks Peruvian Pisco. If yours doesn't, move on to a better bar.)

Gin and Tonics always work for me, but after watch Miami Vice again recently I've discovered the Mojitio. Not super girly, but just girly enough to get a raised eyebrow of the right kind from the fairer sex.
If you're drinking any spiced rum other than Sailor Jerry's, you're drinking the wrong stuff.
My favourite mixed drink is a White Russian. Just had to give it a go after watching The Big Lebowski, and haven't looked back since.

One shot Vodka, one shot Kahlua and topped up with milk, in a short glass (preferably with some crushed ice).

I've been meaning to try a White Russian and always get nervous before asking cuz I'm unsure of it being a good Saturday night drink.
It's a standard kind of vodka drink, but I stay away from them b/c the idea of milk & alcohol percolating in my innards is somewhat disquieting.
Caucasians are fantastic, but as Hocken says, not a great Saturday night drink. I'll have one or two occasionally, but I have to switch to something else before all the dairy fills me up.

You know, I've seen this stuff at stores and always ALMOST buy it but then back down. The fact that it's constantly one of the cheapest rums scares me.

I made these last new year's and everyone seemed to agree that one was interesting; two was work. If it's not REALLY ice cold it tastes like citrus lighter fluid.
If you must drink mixed drinks, try and find a recipe for a Texas/Mexican Martini. Chuy's in Austin served them. Pretty good.

That said, my drink of choice is bourbon on the rocks. High end with Woodford Reserve or Ridgemont Reserve being as low as I go.

I think it's great. Hell of a lot better than Morgan, which is at every bar around here while Jerry is nowhere to be found. There's another one in a coffin shaped bottle that's really good too but I don't remember the name.
Awesome, Ill be picking some up today hopefully and give it a try since my Spiced Rum supply is empty.

And to anyone who keeps a decently stocked bar at home: How much do you invest into it every month or so?

For a bit of amusement, I suggest you try out a Californian Iced Tea. It's basically the same ingredients (one shots each of tequila, gin, rum and vodka) but topped up with red wine instead of Coke. Just make sure you don't operate any heavy machinery.

I'm a whiskey man myself. I enjoy beer but I can't use it to get drunk anymore. I like a good whiskey over a little ice, or if it's a longer night with a bit of soda.

Scotch and soda is also nice.

I know there is such a thing as a Long Beach Iced Tea which has cranberry juice instead of coke.

However I tried a Tokyo Tea last Saturday, way too freakin sweet for my taste.

You could always go with a Black Russian - just Kahlua and vodka.

Of course if you want to get drunk quick for little money and you have no fixed address, then I strongly recommend you take a look at www.bumwine.com.

I can't find anywhere that carries it around here (central Louisiana).

I've been on a rum kick lately, but I want to try some different brands.

For a good summer drink, try this:

2 shots of Seagrams V/O (7 if that's more in your price range)
3oz of Sprite
Fill the rest of a juice glass with Orange Juice, and serve on the rocks.

It's tasty, relaxing, and perfect for BBQ days.

This summer, I'm addicted to brown rhum mixed with ginger beer.

Completely agree. Crown & coke is pretty damn good, but I prefer Crown & ginger ale. The ginger compliments the Crown better, if you ask me.

If you're just lounging around the pool or beach, I recommend Bacardi Limon & lemonade. It's a pretty good drink, and the Limon is strong (70 or 80 proof, can't remember) but not strong enough to run an internal combustion engine like 151.
