Damages on FX

Tonight's the night. FX has rolled out Dirt & The Riches this year. Dirt was shit and The Riches wasn't anything special. I'm hoping Damages hits the level of The Shield and Rescue Me(at least the level of pre-season 4 of Rescue Me). At the very least the return of Glenn Close to tv is a great thing.
The reviews have been pretty great so far and as I've yet to see a single ad for this *high fives the TIVO* I'm not burned out on it before it has even started. I'll check it out.
I hope its premiere means that I won't have to see any more of the annoying ads for the show.

That's FX for you...

Nothing can compare to what seemed like nine months of promos for Dirt. It really, really made Nip/Tuck hard to sit through. "This time, you've gone too far..." Ooh, it's edgy. It's not like Friends. Shut up.

p.s. I'll give this show a shot, if only because of I've liked looking at Rose Byrne ever since Attack of the Clones.
I liked it though the dialog was kind of labored and overwrought. Plus I think the whole idea of cops investigating Rose and everything told in flashback to be kind of gimmicky. But the characters, plotting, and excellent directing was intriguing enough to watch the next episode. What I'm trying to say is it didn't eye fuck me and then leave with the herpes like Dirt did.
It did suffer from a lot of the contrived intrigue and displays of power that always pops up in shows about high-powered "insert career." And yes, I was a little irritated that the story wasn't brought all the way up to the present. I think all of that non-linear stuff works much better in a self-contained feature than an entire season of a series. That's really gonna turn off somebody tuning in mid-season to see what the fuss is about (which might be hypocritical of me to say, given my fondness for Arrested Development's somewhat complex plotting and constant callbacks). Of course, I didn't like that technique in Inside Man, either, so maybe it's a personal problem.

Still, it was pretty well executed, and now I kind of want to see where it goes.
Please tell me this means when I watch Rescue Me tomorrow I wont see Glenn Close talking about being raped at the start of every commercial break anymore.

I really liked it. The flashbacks don't bother me at all and the cast is good even if Ray(Danson's lawyer) has that annoying country drawl.

I need to re-watch the episode because I noticed a couple of things:

1)At the beginning when Ellen ran out of the building all bloody, didn't she run past Pattys doorman?

2)When the cops broke down the door of Ellen's place before they found the body, wasn't the security chain on?

I didn't notice the chain on the door, so I'm not sure about that. But I'm almost 100% positive that it was Patty's doorman at the beginning.

I thought this was absolutely fantastic. I loved the ending. It felt like the end to the Shield pilot - a pretty big 'twist' that tells you a lot about the main character, while offering up believable plotlines involving the cast. If the episodes are all like this one, I'll be pretty happy.

It was. Though I'm sure Patty is fine.

I thought this last night then saw on EW.com that I wasn't alone in the Alias vibe that was hammered home with the dead fiance.

It's worth another look and has promise but everthing pails in comparison to The Shield pilot.

I'm a huge fan of The Shield, but you have to throw Lost in there as well.
True but I try to seperate cable shows from the network ones.
Man...this show is pretty darn good...a captivating legal-TV, "Who done It"...

At first, I thought it might be just so/so...but now, I can't wait until next Tuesday!?
Solid pilot. Lots of things to love.

I hope this show holds up to the hype.

Well the detective said that the chain was on the door. I don't know how that works. Did she slip out the window?

Anyway, good second episode. I'm really intrigued to see where the show is going beyond this season.
A good show so far and Close is doing an excellent job of playing a cold-hearted, calculating bitch, although a very smart and savvy one.

The only thing that bothers me is Zeljko Ivanek as Frobisher's lawyer, Ray Fiske.

His faux Southern accent in unnecessary.

They did make the point of showing the screen on the window with the pigeons and then no screen. She either went out that way or the killer chained the door then went out the window after Ellen left.

Not sure what's the point of Katie lying so much. She's the one part of the show I'm not buying. I would guess she might have passed messages and maybe she thinks she'd be in trouble.

I think he's pretty good in that role. Plus, I don't find his accent to be half-as annoying as some of the fake Brit ones...eh hem...Madonna anyone? Ha ha...

I too have wondered about Katie's fibbing...it'll definitely add to the drama and give the writers room to work with, if they ever wanted to make her character go back on her word...with these flash-backs/forwards...you never know??

I don't mind Ivanek's performance... it's the accent that's weird to me.

And how does an actor's performance on a TV series have anything to do with an actual celebrity and the way they speak in a public setting?

No doubt about it, this is my favorite show of the summer. Ray's country boy drawl still bothers me but that's small potatos in the scheme of things.

I think I missed something, who was the guy in the hat with the baby?

It doesn't really. But in a way, they're both using fake and forced, unnatural accents; which (...if I understood you correctly) ends up taking something away from the overall impression.

Anyway, I was just making a comment/stating an opinion and wasn't at all trying to say that you're wrong or anything.

Perhaps, better examples would've been Renée Zellweger, Claire Danes, Gwyneth Paltrow or even Sienna Miller in reverse; in certain roles.

Definitely agree, there!! And, wait...I must have missed something with the hat-guy and baby, also?? Now, I gotta catch the encore!
That mystery man with the hat and baby was Boon, right?
Why do I not care about this show?

I continue to watch, and my wife is interested, but for all of the flashy editing and dramatic music, I'm still not giving a shit. I admire Close's performance, and I really enjoy Danson playing a bad guy, but I could give a crap about Rose Byrne's character and the witness and all of that crap.

It has all the earmarks of subpar FX: quick-cutting "intensity" interspersed with thudding themes and the word "shit" being squeezed into conversations 3-4 times for effect. Er, FX.
Good, smart show. FX keeps delivering. The only thing is-- it is going to be very hard for it to gain fans that haven't been watching since the pilot. If you picked up right now, you wouldn't know what the hell is going on...
Hmm...I kind of hear that.

Although, shows like Lost and other's that follow a twisted flash-back-and-forth format...still seemed to constantly attract a new audience...hopefully, this could be the same for Damages.

Either way you have to applaud Close and Danson's performances so far!!

Man I was so mixed up. Last week when they were talking about Greg(Katie's Fuck-buddy), I thought it was another character altogether. So he's the big witness now.

I didn't even notice that at first. The hat distracted me.
Boon is Frobisher's Stock Broker, right??? I think so too...

Poor Katie was so jacked-up at the time...It's too bad they had to destroy her life, hopes and dreams, as well!

Evil...Ha ha ha....
Man, this show is really good at holding my attention so far. They haven't really let anything earth-shattering drop, but that makes it all the better for when the shit actually hits the fan.

It does seem a little weird that so much attention is focused on a brand-new associate at the firm, though. 2:1 odds say it's Patty behind the Ellen frame job...
David should be killed for fucking around Ellen. It's Rose Byrne for christsakes!

Danson is a crazy bastard. I really like watching him as he morphs from nice guy to lunatic and back.

Seconded! I'm pretty sure that he doesn't though. At first I thought the girl worked for Frobisher but now I think she's just a "fatal attraction" that kills David.

I've been guessing that it's Patty trying to break-up David and Ellen. Though not sure what the motivation would be.

I think in general, my first instinct is to always suspect Patty when something happens on the show. When I first heard of Damages, I might have thought it was going to be a pretty basic Patty-good versus Frobisher-evil story. But not sure I can put anything past the manipulative Patty.

Everything is so damn twisted. I know it's the stalker chick that kills David but I'm waiting for another twist. Patty sort of took a back seat this last episode and I don't think that it was really a problem.

I'm liking the fracturing of the Frobisher team. The SEC guy(can't remember his name) & Ray doing their own thing is a nice little wrinkle. So many questions and only a few episodes left.
They do a good job at making the dreams seem like they are reality. Ray's spitting out of the teeth is still the best one, though.
This show is great and I love that it's not based entirely around Glenn Close's character like the ads were making it out to be. This show definitely deserves a 2nd season and I hope Ted Danson gets a nomination next year.
Absolutely loving this show. It's so much better than any of the new shows I've seen recently. I really hope it sticks the landing, and ends well. I don't need some crazy twist or anything, just a really satisfying ending. I get the feeling that this probably won't get renewed (like Thief), so here's hoping there isn't a cliffhanger.

Anyone know how many episodes are left?

Well Nip/Tuck is coming back at the end of October so at the most Damages will get 3 or 4 more episodes.

This week was episode 9, so we have 4 more left, finale will be Oct 23.

This is a tough show for me to conceive there can be a second season. I'm hoping that the present day events and the flashback events finally converge by the end of the season - resolving the whole Frobisher storyline. Is there enough of the Frobisher story to tell that can carry over to a second season? Because I can't imagine what direction the show could take in a season 2, because I don't see any possibility for it to return to the status quo, of Ellen still working with Patty.

Very curious about the stalker, I am still assuming that she is somehow connected to the Patty or Frobisher. I would be surprised if she just turns out to be a random character. I know Ellen mentioned she's had restraining orders taken out on her before. As I said previously, I still have suspicions that Patty employed her to try and break up David and Ellen - and not the first time Patty has used the stalker, hence her previous restraining orders?

So Ellen and David fought, and Ellen leaves the condo. Shortly after, someone shows up and kills David. Meanwhile, Ellen goes to Patty, and ends up staying at her place, while Patty goes to the beach house. That night, Ellen is attacked at Patty's house. Any chance that both Ellen and Patty were targeted to be killed that night, and Patty lucked out by leaving for the beach house?

So many questions, but I'm loving it.

That fucking puppy went unscathed! He has so much to own up to!
Most certainly the puppy and the speeding car were in cahoots to kill Gregory Molina.
Was anyone else severly creeped out why Close's breakdown outside on the lawn chair? That was really fucked up. Glenn can make some freaky faces. It looked like someone was stealing her soul.
I think the stalker and her son are just filler that will have no payoff.
The son storyline definitely seems to have gotten bit in the butt.

Good call on that. That's as good a reason as any I've heard for connecting the stalker and the other major players.
"I'm so sick of this bullshit."
Great line, great delivery, great reaction from Close. They're keeping it interesting so far, but I'm having a hard time seeing how they could tie the storylines together into a satisfying package and still be able to continue with a second season. It'll be interesting to see how it works out over the next three weeks.
I knew as soon as he came back into her office, he was going to off himself, but the way it was shot still gave it impact. I really can't wait to see how this ends, especially since they've seemingly tied all the (interesting) threads together.

Oh, and stalker girl freaks me out.

Seriously, seeing her just sitting in the apartment like that.

I know I've said before that I thought the stalker was someone Patty was using to break up Ellen and David. But that theory is no longer making sense to me. It seems like Patty did indeed consider Ellen expendable, and of no use once Gregory died. So if Patty did hire Ellen just to use her connection to Katie, then she could probably care less about breaking up the two. And also, if Patty was involved - then the stalker wouldn't have needed to steal keys to the apartment - Patty's apartment.

So two episodes to go - and I still don't know how it's going to wrap-up. Great television.

Here is the big question: What were those guys doing at Ellens place when David walked in?

My dad said the same thing. I just don't understand why Patty would want to spy on Ellen. That guy was working for Patty as far as I know.
