Underappreciated Voices

There's been plenty of threads about the best voices, but I wanted to mention one that I don't think gets nearly enough credit, mostly due to his era and the band he was in -- Colin Hay from Men at Work. Not only did have a near-perfect pop voice, he could go from low and musing to high and exultant, all with amazing clarity. Great range and phrasing too. It's too bad Men at Work got tagged with the one-hit wonder label (even though they had three or four successful singles). His appearance on Scrubs singing an acoustic version of "Overkill" proves he still has the pipes.

So, anyone have any other vocalists who, for whatever reason, you don't think get the love they deserve?

Lisa Gerrard.

Best known now for her Gladiator soundtrack, which has been mimicked to death, and by a few for being in Dead Can dance. the best female vocalist I have ever heard, and that include Diamanda Galas (my 2nd favorite) and Kate Bush.

I love "Beautiful World" far more then I should. He played Calgary a few years ago with a very small band. Most of the songs were just Hay and his guitar. Amazing concert and his version of that song was amazing. Seemed like a really nice guy, too.

Not sure if this counts but people tend to talk about Lyle Lovett's arrangements and his quirky lyrics but what hooked me on his work was his beautiful pure voice. The first time I heard Simple Song I was in awe.

I also love the elasticity of Danny Elfman's voice. He's not the world's greatest singer but he does some very cool things with his vocals. Particularly his stuff on the soundtracks for Nightmare and Corpse Bride.

One of my favourite singers in the last fifteen or so years is Dar Williams. She puts a lot of emotion into her songs. Again, not brilliant but great to listen to.

I never listen to him. I only know of his great voice because I think he was on a Brian Wilson tribute TV special a few years ago - Vince Gill. He has amazing range. I swear I heard him doing some sweet Beach Boys ballads amazing justice.

Is Nic Cage's voice under appreciated? I would say his and perhaps Bruce Campbell's. Not that Bruce Campbell doesn't have a devoted following, but you could say his voice is under appreciated only because he continues to be a B movie actor, however popular he is.

Um, if that makes sense.

Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust. One of the most soulful voices in modern music, one of the few true talents to rise out of nu-metal, not to mention one of a sad handful of black vocalists in rock, and he'll never get the respect and because, well, it's fucking nu-metal. Besides, that band has been coasting on said voice for about two albums now.

Here's two underappreciated singers: Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen. Freddy, quite justly, was one of the all time great singers, but the true power in this band came when all three of them harmonized, creating the signature 'Queen Sound'. I particularly like Brian's voice, and most of the songs that he sang actual lead on are quite good. His range is fairly limited compared to Freddy's, but he used what he had to great effect.

I couldn't get into Sevendust until, oddly enough, I kept listening at the insistence of my father. Lejon is very powerful, I could listen to that guy sing the phone book. In the same vein, I'll throw out Corey Glover, formerly (?) of Living Colour.

A lot of metal singers in general get overlooked simply because of the genre. Guys like Dio and Halford have some serious pipes, but when you're singing songs like "Holy Diver" and "Turbo Lover", you tend to get overlooked.
