Lost Footage You'd LOVE to See...

Dawn of the Dead - The original "suicide" ending. I trully have no idea if they ever filmed this. There's been different people saying different things over the years.

Back to the Future - Any of the "Eric Stolz as Marty" stuff from the original Fall 1984 shoot.
Closer - the Natalie Portman nude scenes.

The Island - the Scarlet Johansen nude scenes.
The destroyed last reel of Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons. A neutered masterpiece.
The actual ending to Explorers. No idea if it was ever filmed, but I'll be damned if the movie as is doesn't just sort of stop.
You guys have already said the actual stuff I would like, but I am curious to see Stewart Townsend's footage as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings.

There are plenty of stills out there. Stolz looks a little out of place, but that may be due to 20 years of seeing Fox in the role.

Guess the Spider Pit footage from the original King Kong should be mentioned here...a holy grail of lost footage legends.
The scene from Saving Private Ryan, the one near the beginning where Oppum gets shot in the face.
All the shit that's missing from Metropolis.
London After Midnight.

And the Keitel as Willard footage from Apocalypse Now, which you'd have seen in Hearts of Darkness if Zoetrope could have found Keitel's paperwork/releases from the film.

Seconded. I could tear my hair out over the fact that the DVD version I have now is likely as complete a cut as anyone is ever going to see, and even that has sections where the storyboard comes on and just summarizes the scene you've just missed.
The uncut version of the concluding speech in On Deadly Ground.
all of the missing footage cut from 'Hard Target' would be nice to see.
The 2.5 hour+ cut of "The Breakfast Club" (only exists as a Betamax copy)

The original cut of "The Lady From Shanghai" (or, hell, any other post-"Kane", Pre-"Trial" Welles film)

The 20 minutes Terry Gilliam was pressured to cut from "Baron Munchausen"
(the negatives still exist!)

Jonathan Demme's original cut of "Swing Shift" (the most treasured bootleg out there?)

The two-hour parallel film made from outtakes from Peter Greenaway's "The Draughtsman's Contract" (which may yet be released under the title "The Hedgecutters")

I have seen the original cut of Disney's "The Black Cauldron", and I hope it will come out on DVD eventually (Andreas Deja is optimistic that it will).

A friend of mine once saw Aliens on network TV years ago. and during the big shootout where the aliens are falling through the ceiling, he swears he saw a shot of Hicks turning and mercy killing Hudson by unloading about a few rounds into him after he's pulled under the floor. In all the cuts of the film I have seen, this one shot is never there. Not a big thing, but something I always liked the idea of and would like to see.

I still want to see the cut of Superman II where Non kills the kid on the horse. Seen the stills on line, but not the actual clip.
What the C.I.A. cut from the Zapruder film.

Try here for stills.

Amazing.

I'd like to see the test footage of Nic Cage as Superman.

All of those destroyed episodes of the animated Doctor Who would be cool.
The original ending to First Blood where Rambo kills himself. Yeah, yeah there's stills on the DVD but I want the actual scene.
The cut scenes of Clooney and Adrian Brody in The Thin Red Line. Help me Criterion!

Huh? More details please.

I'll second these. Is it real about The Island or just some stupid internet rumor?

Also, I love the fact this is your third post ever.

Read Andrew Yule's "Losing the Light: Terry Gilliam and the Munchausen Saga" and "Gilliam on Gilliam". Neither book goes into great detail on what was cut , but Gilliam says that he acquiesced to studio pressure while cutting it. I think that the Criterion Collection laserdisc of "Munchausen" was going to re-integrate those scenes, but the cost proved to be prohibitive.

edit-I think Christopher Lambert is in some of those scenes

Johansson said in an interview that she was ready to do topless scenes for The Island, but Bay refused because of the PG-13 rating.

And some of the lost episodes of the original series too.

There was an article in Empire either at the end of last year or the beginning of this year about the 4-hour+ cut of Apocalypse Now and how much of it is actually very boring. But damn if I haven't always wanted to see it. Its essentially little more than an assembly cut, but its one of my favourite films ever made and would be a fascinating insight into some elements of the making of it.

Thanks, but I've already seen tons of stills of Stolz as Marty. I'd just love to see how he delivered his lines, interacted with Lloyd, etc. That's gotta be some fascinating footage to watch...

I'd also love to see the dozens of screen-tests over the years for James Bond. I figured they'd have at least shown em for each perspective Bond actor at that point (i.e. Dalton's '68/'86 tests and Brosnan's '86 test for The Living Daylights) on the "Ultimate Edition" DVDs. Seeing James Brolin's screen-test was just...wrong...and weird(!)

The pie-fight from the end of 'Strangelove'.

As for trailers that robbed us of stuff...

There are much longer cuts on ebay, but chances are good that the quality is shit. I would love to see this as well.

Same goes for the .3 second shot in the Vanilla Sky trailer. The Cruiser with a gun and the SWAT team. No idea if there was an actual scene there, but still.

Has the "Eddie Valiant turns into a pig" scene been included in any of the Roger Rabbit releases?

The SE DVD from 2003/2004 includes it as a supplement.

You know, I like to think of myself as an ultimately rational human being, but there's no way to describe the absolute joy I'd experience from a Scarlett Johansson nude scene.

you beat me with this one...

He is just an asshole, It would be a huge success...
So what happened with those SJ's "I'm ready to do topless" ?

there are a bunch of different workprints/director's cuts/screeners but I still don't know if it's all covered. someday some wonderful human being is going to make an "ultimate" version that has EVERYTHING.

I myself would love to see the lost footage from various Hong Kong films such as School On Fire, Full Contact, Escape from Brothel, Ebola Syndrome etc. over the years I've read so many times that scenes were filmed that never made it past HK censors (e.g. Yam's character in Full Contact plucking out an eyeball and sucking on it). I know trying to find lost film footage in old Hong Kong must be tougher than rhino jerky, but still...

also off the top of my head, I'm remembering a recent article on Chud that mentioned George Romero possibly shooting additional scenes for Umberto Lenzi's Spasmo. terrible film from a terrible director but it's Romero, so very curious to see those additional bits (assuming they even exist and it's not just bullshit)

You know, I've never seen the movie, so I don't know how realistic it is...but I remember reading a review over at aintitcool of a test screening for that Love Song for Bobby Long movie that came out a while ago. The reviewer mentioned his excitment about the love scene Johansson was in and that it included nudity.

I assume the scene was excised and/or was only partial or something and I could totally be full of crap...but lord knows I tried to find all the info I could about this Travolter flick before deciding not to see it...

There is some spectacular side boob in it.

Orson Welles' THE DEEP. Shot in the late 1960s and based on the same terrific Charles Williams novel that became Philip Noyce's DEAD CALM (with Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill). Peter Bogdonavich claims that Welles shot almost all of it except for a few special effects, and I hear tell those will be cleaned up and CGIed for a theatrical release in the next few years.

Bob Rafelson's HEAD, or The Monkees Feature Written by Jack Nicholson. All video and DVD versions have run in the 85 minute range, but the film previewed at an incredible 110 minutes!

Any footage from the aborted Diabolik project starring Jean Sorel and Elsa Martinelli, as well as the Catherine Deneuve dailies for the completed (but Denueve-less) DANGER DIABOLIK.

All of the different versions John Cassavetes edited of HUSBANDS, including the "light comedy" print he screened for Columbia executives. And while I'm on the subject of Cassavetes, I'd also like to see the original cut of A CHILD IS WAITING before Stanley Kramer messed with it, and BIG TROUBLE before Columbia messed with it, and LOVE STREAMS before Cannon messed with it.

Bill Gunn's STOP. From the director of the amazing GANJA AND HESS. Shelved by Warner Bros. in 1970.

Harvey Keitel as Capt. Willard, and as Ziegler in EYES WIDE SHUT. I'd also like to see the Jennifer Jason Leigh footage from the latter.

The original versions of CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS and SEPTEMBER, and any of the Michael Keaton dailies from THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO.

Since Wong Kar-Wai will be releasing ASHES OF TIME REDUX later this year, maybe he'll find the urge to dust off the cans holding the 45 minutes or so he filmed of his DAYS OF BEING WILD sequel starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Maggie Cheung. And while he's at it, maybe also some decent scenes from 2046.

Terrence Malick's workprint for THE THIN RED LINE, with the pared-down roles of Adrien Brody, John C. Reilly and George Clooney restored, along with actors who were completely MIA for the theatrical version (Mickey Rourke, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas), and Billy Bob Thornton's narration.

SMOKEY IS THE BANDIT. Yup, that's right. The first cut of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT 3, where Gleason played Buford and The Bandit. Test-screened in '83 to an understandably nonplussed audience.

Harrison Ford's cameo as the principal in E.T.: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL.

Gary Oldman's cameo as the priest in DEAD PRESIDENTS.
What WAS that second version of "Cursed"?
I'd love to see a longer version of The Thin Red Line, as well as the original cut of The New World...

Now if only some sweet soul would leak some "Eric Stolz as Marty McFly" footage on YouTube...
The film hasn't even come out yet, but still I'd really like to see Oliver Hirshbiegel's original cut of THE INVASION.
Great picks, S.P. Gunn's "Stop" has faced even more in-studio repression that Tom Schiller's 1984 masterpiece "Nothing Lasts Forever". According to one site, the only time it ever screened outside of the Warners lot was in 1990 at the Whitney.

The Woody Allen outtakes would be of great historical value, although I'm sure they've been destroyed. "September" should have been aborted, and Woody should have just cashed out the insurance policy on it.
was Anthony Michael Hall fired from "Full Metal Jacket" during pre-production, or was any footage actually shot?
I know some of you will think I'm a pervert, but I'd love to see the Cannes cut of "Caligula" that played at a few underground film clubs in the U.K. before disappearing
post #49 of 79
It's a pity the original footage from EXORCIST III has been lost, because it would have been a dramatically different (and judging from the screenplay, better) film.

Also, I'd LOVE to see Bakshi's LORD OF THE RINGS sans rotoscoping (just the original 16mm footage), plus the mysterious B-roll footage that was shot for the unfinished PART 2.
Not that I'd want to marathon it or anything, but I wish the 9-hour cut of von Stroheim's Greed still existed.
