Blade runner: Final cut - full details

Thread Starter
I think this merits a new thread...

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65403

Blade Runner: The Final Cut will be included in three stunning DVD editions: a Two-Disc Special Edition (at $20.97 SRP), a Four-disc Collector’s Edition ($34.99 SRP) and the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition ($78.92 SRP) in Collectible “Deckard Briefcase” packaging.

Simultaneous HD DVD and Blu-Ray versions (each $TBD) of the “Deckard Briefcase” will also be released in numbered, limited quantities. HD DVD and Blu-Ray 5-Disc Digi Packs with collectible slipcase (each $TBD) will include all of the UCE content.

Ford, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos, Joanna Cassidy, Sean Young and Daryl Hannah are among some 80 stars, filmmakers and others who participate in the extensive bonus features. Among the bonus material highlights is Dangerous Days - a brand new, three-and-a-half-hour documentary by award-winning DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika, with an extensive look into every aspect of the film: its literary genesis, its challenging production and its controversial legacy. The definitive documentary to accompany the definitive film version.

Wow. I think I'm going to have to go the whole 5-disc on this one.
I would love to see the work print cut of the film, but that price jump from 4 to 5 discs is a little steep. I wonder if there will be any other way to view that cut, aside from mooching off a spend-happy friend.
Yeah, can I just get the five discs? I really don't need the collectible briefcase packaging if it's going to add 45 bucks to the price.

EDIT: Well, 30, since the fifth disc is probably adding about 15, but still, just give me a damn slip case.
What exactly is on that fifth disc?

Fuck the case.

*edit- Dickson said the same shit, basically.
That price for the five-disc is just the MSRP. We should be able to get it for significantly less, especially online, right? But still, as someone who roamed the earth during the Laserdisc Era, when special edition releases lighter than this could cost a couple hundred bucks, I'd say this is a deal even without the "toys."
What Dickson said.
I might go for the 4 disc package, money restriction applied. I want the 5 DVD set, but damned...
I'm an anal bastard about packaging, and I still haven't bought the Sin City S.E. because I already own the book, and the box sucks.

As much as I love Blade Runner, I'm playing this one by ear.
Well, the article said there will be HD versions of the UCE in a slipcase, as well as the limited briefcase; so, for all you Blu-Ray and HD-DVD people, you can probably save some cash that way.
The Ultimate Matrix Collection was $80 MSRP. The first week, sales brought it down to a nice, manageable $54.99.

I'm hoping for the same here.

Even if it doesn't, though, I'm scared of how much I want that fifth disc.
Mr Dickson's speaking for a lot of us, it seems. I'd love that workprint disc but I loathe 'quirky' packaging.
Considering that the 5th disc is the long-anticipated workprint, I think I'll splurge on this one.
I'd love to watch the workprint, but I don't think I can bring myself to buy all of that.
Wow, that sounds amazing. Blu-Ray version for me, please.
I've seen the workprint. It's worth it just for Roy's last scene.
I'll make a decisions once I get an idea of how much it's being sold at Best Buy (or whoever is the cheapest) on the week it comes out.
The only version I currently have is a DVD transfer of the laserdisk. I'll be purchasing the briefcase. No question.

Any links to the pre-DVD release theatrical run?
A workprint is a rough version of a motion picture, used by the film editor(s) during the editing process. Such copies generally contain original recorded sound that will later be re-dubbed, stock footage as placeholders for missing shots or special effects, and animation tests for in-production animated shots or sequences.

Yeah, I had to look it up.
So...what about the theatrical re-release dates?

October 5th for New York and L.A.

Really? Will it be theatrical or director's cut? I just might have to get in on that.

It sounds like it's going to be a theatrical showing of Ridley Scott's new cut.
Okay, so long as the the theaer isn't 20 miles out of my way. I'll be there.

My gut tells me it'll be over at the Nuart or The Archlight.

YES. I can't wait to see this on HD-DVD. The $TBD scares me a bit as I can easily see this set going for $80+ on HD-DVD like the Matrix set. Damnit, guess I'll have to use that money I was saving up for the Andy Sidaris Collector's Edition set.
Just to echo some folks from earlier...damn, $80 is a STEEP price tag for that five disc set. I really want it, but unless it goes on sale for a more reasonable price, I'm probably just gonna have to stick with the four-disc set.

My excitement is growing, though (and it was pretty high to begin with).
I'm going to have to turn some tricks to get the 5 disk set!
I think I may be on this DVD set.

If the BR workprint in question is the same version that circulated briefly in the early 1990s (before Warners embargoed it in favor of their official 'director's cut'), it's a fairly late edit, with no temp FX or 'scene missing' cards. In fact, it's not instantly recognizable as an unfinished film. Only a heavy-duty fan will notice the variations in ADR, background music, or editing, but they're significant.

Dev - Where?
Wow that looks incredible but I don't think I can afford the 5 disc.

Anyone see any good preorder deals on this yet?

Well this just sealed the deal that this set is an instant classic.

It will probably play at the Landmark, too. I'm sure nobody wants a repeat of the ridiculously huge crowds that tried to cram into screenings of the director's cut in 1992.
Fuck it. I'm getting the 5 disc set gee gaws and all. Hell I'm even going to do my Christmas shopping in september so I can spend on myself in December.
What Litmus said. I remember spending $125 on things I had never seen simply to get the Criterion version.
I'll probably go with the 4 disc unless someone reports the workprint is the best version or has substantial additional footage. Though that spinner is nice.
That Blade Runner briefcase will be mine. It'll put the Scarface coke box to shame.

The WP is the best version I've seen... so far, and as well as I can remember sixteen years back. I like the looser editing in the opening sequences, and that you actually get to hear Rachel play the piano without Vangelis competing for attention. And I've already mentioned the final shot of Roy on the roof.

Scott may very likely be incorporating some aspects of that version into the FC, so I'll have to wait and see. Fortunately we'll probably be getting a theatrical release in my neighborhood.

That is downright acceptable.
Agreed, but the release date is December 18? How much longer can we hold out?
I'm sold on the 5 disc. It looks great. And i have no problem paying the 60 bucks it'll probably cost online.
Yahoo! Movies has posted a handful of clips, including a mini-trailer for the "Dangerous Days" documentary and the Zhora chase clip here.

I couldn't tell if this was the fixed version or not, although I cannot imagine why it wouldn't be considering that it's advertising the upcoming DVD release.

$70 for the Blu-Ray version. I'm putting down for that right now. This is the one thing I'm dying to have in HD.
Only $70? When does Amazon charge you for a pre-order purchase?
If you're like me, and I know I am, I care more about the movie and special features than statues and briefcases and bookends and not. So, the 5 disc version on Blu-Ray for $27.95 http://www.amazon.com/Runner-Five-Di...5920344&sr=1-2 or HD-DVD for the same price http://www.amazon.com/Blade-Runner-F...5920254&sr=8-2 . Apparently, no briefcase, but you save around 50 bucks, so I see it as a good deal. I already preordered my Blu-Ray version.

Amazon doesn't charge until it ships.
Collect 'em all!
I'd love to get the regular dvdset, but the price for it, and the cheaper price for the HD releases sounds really tempting, and I'll be picking up an Xbox 360, so I'd love to get an HD-DVD add-on for it. Decisions, decisions.

That has to be a mistake. $27.95 is too cheap for the 5 discs WITHOUT special packaging. Too cheap if they were sent in ziplock baggies, with no cover art even.

ETA: Well... maybe I'm wrong:

Wow. That's a damn good deal.
