Grindhouse coming to DVD, yet, not...

The Weinstein Company and Genius Products announced today that the two films that made up the classically under-rated Grindhouse release will hit DVD on two separate, extended and unrated DVDs.
And you just KNOW those FUCKERS are gonna hit us with a three-disc Grindhouse with double-feature intact and some extra bullshit somewhere down the line...

Fuckin' fuckin' fuck fuck, fuck!

Between this and the Zodiac: SE, this makes me want to burn down... something!

So don't buy it. Self-control isn't that big a deal, is it? Yes, I know the "real" cut is coming, so I'm not buying these. YOU hold the power, BTSMGL.
So no trailers on these? Bastards.
Still really a shame this didn't turn into a franchise. Would have loved seeing Machete and Thanksgiving next year.

I held out two years not buying the pathetic Ocean's Twelve DVD, but caved in two months ago.

Guess what's coming up in December? That's right, a big deluxe Ocean's Trilogy Set.

I missed Zodiac in theaters and was counting the days until the DVD release. A week before it comes out, "hey guys, two-disc SE in a few months!"

Bastards!

And I can't rent it, for reasons too stupid to explain.

Damnit.

*still hasn't bought Kill Bill for the same bullshit reasons*
post #6 of 122
Two things about Zodiac:

1) They told you there was going to be a 2-disc edition before the single disc hit the market. It's not like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

2) The theatrical cut won't be on the 2-disc edition (I don't think). So there's not going to be any overlap. Just pick it up on Netflix in a month or two when it's priced at $5.99

Yeah, but I'm an "SE" whore. I always want the biggest, most-expensive version (but not at the expense of buying a movie twice). So, even announcing it beforehand brakes me from picking up the normal version until the big one gets here.

Don't ask me about The West Wing: Complete Series. DON'T ASK.
I'm really comfortable with buying only the extended Death Proof right now, as that's the masterpiece and Planet Terror is just okay. I also don't mind trading in dvds for game store credit later when the SE's come out. I am humble sometimes I suppose. Although I only do it for movies I really like, like Hot Fuzz this tuesday.
Well, fuck that.
Looks like I'm waiting for the eventual three-disc set. I really hope the backlash hits these guys hard and they release it sooner rather than later.

Fucking HATE double dips like this - how hard is it to just release one version with everything in it but the kitchen sink and let it go?

Probably because they know there's a big enough (big enough to Grindhouse DVD sales expectations, anyways) that'll double-dip. Plus, laymen who'll pick them up individually.

That Ocean's Trilogy Boxed Set wouldn't have pissed me off as hard if I'd only owned the first one.

I own both the 25th and 30th Anniversary DVD's of Jaws. I own X-Men and X-Men 1.5. I own Face/Off and will probably buy the Anniversary edition coming up.

Doesn't piss me off if they're double-dipping a movie that's been out for at least two years (or more).

I hope the eventual "Ultimate Grindhouse DVD Set" comes in a box that opens up to look like that "double-feature movie theater" diorama they used for promotion. That'd be sweet.
did they say specifically that there's no trailers? 'cause in the write-ups i've seen so far, there's been no mention at all.
I find the double dipping trend as annoying as the next person, however:
a) Is this at all surprising?
b) Does it warrant this level of anger
c) See a

They should know, given this movie's dire box office, the only people interested in the DVD are hardcore fans, making a double dip kind of pointless. However, at least the single-movie releases aren't barebones, so it could be worse. It is off-pssing we won't see the trailers though (and whatever happened to Cowgirls from Sweden anyway?).

The same thing that happens to 90% of the stuff Quentin says he's doing. I'm pretty sure his segment went into production long after Planet Terror (remember that temporary halt in production about a year ago?) and so they were pressed for time. As far as I know, they never even got around to shooting it.

But yeah, it does beg the question, who exactly are these DVDs for?

This is off-topic as fuck, but Edgar Wright's Myspace blog mentions that Wal-Mart of all places will be selling a double-disc Hot Fuzz that is comparable to the region 2 discs. He was kind of hinting at it, with no firm info, but look into it, I know I will.
If this was a situation like SIN CITY where they had a firm SE announced when the single disc was released then I'd hold off, but for all we know this supposed ultimate GRINDHOUSE package will go the way of the KILL BILL: WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR.

DEATH PROOF is pretty much a must-buy but PLANET TERROR I can pass on until it's cheap.
It's bad enough they're being released seperately, but with the missing reels restored? That completely misses the point and can only fuck up the movies. Way to go, assholes. Glad I saw this in the theater.

"Your friends at the Weinstein Company", indeed.
If you're afraid of the eventual double dip, there's always the very illegal route in situations like this.
I thought the "playing separately at the theater experiment" failed miserablely. Why screw us on the dvd release with split skus? Is it going to mean 2X the rental and purchase revenue for them?

I would think if the trailers were going to be there on either set, they would have mentioned it as it was a big selling feature for the theatrical run.

Seriously, the smash cut to the burning barbecue shop was the funniest moment in the film.

Isn't this exactly why they're gonna do the double dip? They're best chance for making the most money back is the hardcore fans buying each individual release and then the whole package. I think they probably also assume that they'll get more rental orders for each individual flick.

And, in the end, it might be worth it to have each individual, completed film AND the double feature, with trailers. It is a bummer that the theatrical version isn't coming out first, tho.

And where the hell is KILL BILL: The Whole Bloody Affair, anyways?

Too true.
Though really, we're all in for a tremendous disappointment when we finally see Grindhouse away from an actual theater.
I heard that the Machete trailer was supposed to be on the Planet Terror DVD and the Death Proof DVD was supposed to have the other trailers.

And what are they restoring to Planet Terror? Rodriguez never shot the missing scene. Besides that would ruin the joke. In that scene, the backstory of El Wray, the reconciliation of the mother and her father and the attack and burning down of the restaurant. That's a whole lot of missing footage that needs to remain out of the movie to retain the humor of the jolt in storyline.

That's what I've heard, too. Maybe Harvey's just trying to pull a fast one?

I dunno how Planet Terror will hold up but I'm looking forward to Death Proof...I really liked Tracy Thoms performance (AND 'fro) and I think Tarantino did a good job of recreating that type of exploitation flick...but its definitely pretty slow and not for everybody.
If anything, those who don't like it at least get to see one of the greatest stunts in film history.

Well I saw it opening week, and didn't get the great crowds some people seemed to get, and I've watched a 5 dollar bootleg a friend of mine(true story!) bought since. It was a terrible one, and that may have added a bit to the charm(lip-syncing was off in Death Proof, for instance), but I felt Death Proof was better than the first time I saw it(and I liked it then). Planet Terror loses a lot but is still fun.

But yeah, releasing separate is fucking dumb dumb dumb, yet probably smart financially speaking.

Wal-Mart always have these dumb little "Bonus DVD" discs they sell along with the normal movie. It's usually 20 minutes worth of bonus features, all in a completely separate Amray case.

I'm actually glad that they're both coming out a few weeks apart, because I'm going to be picking up the steelbooks from Best Buy, and that'll be a lot of dough for me to spend all at once. The steelbooks look fucking spectacular.
Found the regular covers:

The covers, much like the movies themselves, are cool and retro-looking and a cheesy Photoshopped-looking pastiche of grindhouse movies, respectively.

The steelbook of Death Proof is not quite as cool, while Planet Terror looks better:

I like the Death Proof steelbook, but too bad that it doesn't have the tagline of "These 8 Women Are About To Meet 1 Diabolical Man"
...and just how much are those steel books going to cost at Best Buy, Mr. Eko? Since I'm inclined to buy them both.
I haven't seen a price yet, but I'd assume they'll be either 19.99 or the more likely 22.99 a piece. 22.99 is the usually the general price for 2 disc sets of movies that have a single disc release, but since both flicks will be 2 disc sets anyway, it could just as easily be 19.99. It's the metal packaging that makes me think it'll be 22.99.
Seeing them seperately, looking at me like that behind their pretty packaging, with their actually interesting-sounding bonus features. It's becoming increasingly likely that I'll pick these up. That pisses me off.

p.s. I agree with everybody who says inserting the missing reel of Planet Terror is a bad move. It's probably the single most crowd-pleasing moment of the entire thing, next to Stuntman Mike's death. However, if it has to exist, I think it could make a pretty fun bonus feature...ESPECIALLY if it goes on for twenty minutes and STILL never gets around to explaining El Wray, McGraw and Dakota's reconciliation or the fire at J.T.'s place.

Not really "crowd pleasing", but the biggest reaction from Grindhouse I heard was the kid shooting himself in Planet Terror, and the chick on the trampoline in the Thanksgiving trailer. Mike's demise was right behind them though.

I don't know why I made that for spoiler-swiping after the mention of Mike, but oh well.

Those steelbooks look nice, especially the Death Proof one. I love the shit out of my The Departed one, I might have to get those. Fuck.

I don't have a huge problem with them being released separately, but if they're adding back in "missing reels" or other such nonsense, then this is stupid. I really liked them both, but I probably only need to own "Death Proof". Or like Moltisanti said, I'll wait until they're inevitably down to $7.50.

I may just end up picking up DEATHPROOF. I can't see Planet Terror being all that fun or funny on repeated viewings.

Not to mention the fact that they went with the shot of Marley Shelton where she's wearing the least amount of clothing, even though she appears like that for about 10 seconds in the movie. But, uh, hey, they're just making use of their "exploitable elements."

Well, he was on the movie poster, just in one of those '70s-disaster -movie-style boxes.

Edit: I don't know where this poster is from, but it's just the tits:

That's true, and he was in a lot of the trailers and ads but it seemed to me that guys like Biehn and Fahey were getting talked up much more before the movie came out. Maybe they'll stick their mugs on the back cover.
Those posters reminds me of how much love was put into these flicks by Rodriguez and Tarantino. What a damn shame. Hopefully the dvds sell, and we at least get Machete DTV.
Slade, that poster is Japanese I believe. I don't remember it being official, but it was Japanese, if that helps. Might I point out the Planet Terror part was made from the poster for the biker flick Hell's Belles.
