300: What the fuck is everyone doing?

I started this thread because I'm stuck. There are three versions of 300 that I can see myself buying and none of them are the full screen version. Figure it out for yourself (or just read the rest of the post).

Anyway, the single disc version is only 15 bucks at Best Buy, but Nick is spot-on in the review: that two-disc set looks awesome. But it's 23 bucks at its cheapest. Finally, there's the untested waters: the HD-DVD/DVD combo format. I believe this one will have minimal features on the side my hardware will allow me to view, but I can see myself picking this version up when I purchase an HD player.

Then again, money is tight and between 300 and HOT FUZZ, I'll gladly choose HOT FUZZ.

So anyway, what in the name of shoulder-massaging tall gay men are the rest of you cretins buying?

I thought you meant "What the fuck is everyone doing" in the film itself,
and I was going to say "yelling".

Because that's what the entire movie is and Wenham yells the worst.
I don't really like 300. There, I said it.

Anyway, since I'm a special features junkie, I'd say go with the 2-disc. Otherwise you'll just kick yourself when the movie's over and you've got nowhere else to go with it.

You could always just re-start it and enjoy the yelling all over again.

I got really pissed when I saw 300 opening weekend. Theater was full of brain-dead conservative Aryan types, some kids wearing red robes and shit, and as a reaction I totally rejected this movie. But I have to say that the movie is creeping up on me. The violent fight sequences are stronger and stylistically more unique than any big action that's come around in the last five years. Also, it's swords & sandals, which has been kind of big in the last 10 years, but with a totally different look. I ignored all these things when I first saw it but I'm kind of into it now.

All that said, I have no answer to the question in the original post. I didn't even know it was out on DVD yet.

I'm pre-haunted by the prospect of high school football teams starting their fall season, having all sat down to watch 300 together. How many time-outs will end with them shouting something about "freedom" or "Sparta"? This movie will also give the already psuedo-fascist school bullies a justification for their reign of terror, because 300 proves that all ugly and awkward people will turn out to be evil.

I will give 300 credit for fleshing out my favorite part of history class. The part with monsters.

I'll still check it out on DVD at some point to give it another chance. At least it's cool to look at. Part of my problem might have been that I had just seen Zodiac, so this all seemed pretty weak to me.

I made purchase of the Blu-Ray version because I want to see what my new TV can do. And, obviously, greased up muscle dudes are the best test of such technology.
i wasn't a big fan of the film but i got the hd dvd one for total geek reasons...I just want to see the fucking hi def awesome picture quality. i feel like a fucking loser.

"TOTAL ASSHOLE" is right. Thanks for wasting my time.

I'll be picking up the HD-DVD combo disc as I'm planning on picking my hd-dvd player in the next few monthes, also I'll be grabbing Hot Fuzzon the HD-DVD combo disc. No reason to buy a movie and then buy the HD version a few months later haha
post #12 of 40
I'm going for the special features edition, mostly because I am a customer whore.

I thought 300 was just so-so...Hot Fuzz was freakin awesome...so I'll be going with the Fuzz.
I have Best Buy gift cards, so I'll be getting the 2-Disc version, as well as Hot Fuzz and the new collector's edition of Red Dawn. WOLVERINES!

Almost agree. I liked "300", but I don't know if I liked it enough to buy the DVD, but I'm definitely getting "Hot Fuzz".

If I was going to buy the 300 DVD, I'd get the 2-disc set, because I'm a fool that way.
I'll be picking up the 2-disc standard DVD today. I was going to hold off on buying this until I picked up a HD/BluRay player, but that hardware upgrade could be a ways off.
I'm the one guy who has yet to see this because I thought the trailers looked terrible. But if I did care about it I'd get the Blu-Ray or HD version, assuming it has all the same special features as the 2-disc. A movie this visual would definitely need the hi-def treatment.

Or just screw 300 and get Hot Fuzz instead, which is what I plan to do.
Go with the 2 disc or the Blu-Ray.

And why in the hell would you even be concerned that there isn't a full-screen version?!? That's like being mad that there isn't a flat-chested Kelly Brook out there. Pan & Scan sucks balls.
I really, really disliked the movie. Whenever someone rambles on and on about how amazing it is, I wish I was thrown off a cliff at birth. I loved the trailers, and then the movie happened and... I was tuning in and out way too often.
I loved the movie. I bought the 2-disc edition today, because the Special Features look interesting. My only reservation was that I like the cover art much better on the 1-disc version.

In fact, I'm hosting a 300 viewing party tonight, with about 20 people attending. None are football players. Half are girls.
I got the 2-disc, and thanks to the special Best Buy has going, got The Bourne Identity -- which I've never seen -- for five bucks.
Granted, only one of the girls has seen the movie so far...
I'm actually going with the HD-DVD version. I have the player for the 360 and 300, regardless of which format, is just screaming (or yelling, like Andrew said) to be seen in Hi-Def.

But $34.99 at Circuit City and Best Buy? THIS... IS... EXPENSIVE!!!

I ordered it off of amazon for about $27 and went with the free shipping. I may have to wait a few days but I'll be saving about $10, if you factor in taxes at the store.

edit: I should put that $10 towards Hot Fuzz... The HD version of that was $23 and change on amazon.
I'll be getting 300 sometime, but not now. I liked seeing it in the theater, but I'm not having the orgasm that so many others had over it. Now Hot Fuzz on the other hand, well, that's worth every penny.

I had the same argument with myself about Hot Fuzz. I decided to get the regular edition because I wasn't convinced I'd get anything extra from watching it in HD versus just upscaling the standard edition, so why spend the extra $$$?

On the other hand, since I already have a PS3, I got the blu-ray edition of 300 since I'm convinced that should look real nice in HD. I'll find out tonight.

EDIT: Of course, now I see all the extra features that are only on the HD-DVD version of Hot Fuzz and I'm kicking myself. Oh well.
Bought the two-disc 300, and Hot Fuzz (P.S., way to make the Widescreen/Full Screen label so inconfuckingspicuous, Universal. Damn near walked out with the wrong version until the cashier stopped me) I have not joined the HD revolution, and don't plan to in the foreseeable future, so, it's just plain old DVDs for me.
Its probably gonna lead to a tarrin' and a featherin'...but I thought Hot Fuzz was just alright--almost long enough to be a Michael Bay film--and I thought it just lacked the joy of Shaun...until the end that is, when it got all Kung Fu Hustle-y and really good. Maybe my expectations were just TOO high...I'll find out when it comes in the mail, I guess.

And I'm sorta dumbfounded that some of the folks who liked Transformers didn't like 300...which, you know, had a linear and rational plot, a short runtime, awesome effects, and more fightin' than you could shake a stick at. In short, all the things Transformers sorely lacked.
Wait till this Friday and buy both, SE/2-Disc of course.

I have a two-disc Predator: Special Edition and a two-disc E.T. - Anniversary Edition in full frame that mock me from the shelves. I feel a sharp pain in my chest every time my memory forgets and I grab at one to watch them again.

I also have a Lord of War: Special Edition that only came with the special features disc and sans the disc with the film itself. And I didn't notice until a week after I bought it when I finally opened it. The fuck--?

I went to 3 places ( 2 Targets and a Walmart) 300 the SE was sold out at all three places
post #31 of 40
Elektro 87, Transformers and 300 are my 2 favorite films of 2007.
Why don't we just make this a sticky and call it the "300 backlash thread"

I bought the 2 disc special edition of 300 and Hot Fuzz, but I got an AWESOME deal on it by mistake. I got the double disc edition for the price of the single disc.

So both cost me around $30.00
I got the Two-Disc version of "300" from Wally-Mart before they sold out. It's setting unopened on the shelf. I'm in no big hurry to watch it.

The SE truly was limited too. Like ten copies, versus 100 copies of the single disc. I enjoyed watching as people looked in vain to find an SE after they were gone. Some people were actually pissed off, and this was at 8:30am. I should have stood ouside and held my own little auction.

The Wally version has a sticker on the front saying that I can download the movie with purchase. Which is cool I guess, but I have dial-up, and it would probably take forever.

Picked up the HD-DVD.

I still haven't bought 300.
Well, I should have gotten my blu-ray yesterday from Amazon but the cunts at the post office didn't bring it. It better be here today or I'm sending a spartan army over there.
I agree 300 has some issues. I was desperately hoping they'd release a version without the fucking voiceover. The movie would have been served better if they lost the voiceover, and all the scenes back in Sparta. Keep it focused on the 302. (That's what it fucking is. Leonidas says he's out for a walk with his trusted lieutenant, and 300 of his best men. That's 302 motherfucker!)

I got lucky. Store across the street had a one day special. (This is in Canada.) $19.97 on release day only. Assumed it was the one disker but wasn't sure the two disker was worth it, but figured $20, score... It was the two disker! Very pleased with that.

As for Hot Fuzz, fuck Universal for what they did in region 1. I imported the region 2 so I get all the commentary tracks and other extras... (For fucks sake, the region 1 is missing 3 fucking commentaries!)

I like a bargain as much as the next guy, but 8 bucks? If that's an issue for ya, time to start doing some serious want-ad scouring.
