Artist's rendering of our galaxy

For fellow space-minded chewers. I found this while browsing digg. It's an artist's rendering of our galaxy using data from NASA. Space is fucking beautiful. Just imagine being able to see this with your own eyes.

Enjoy.

Cool. As great as Google Earth is, when can we expect Google Galaxy?

It does look awesome, although it would never surpass the sight of a freckled girl's smile.

Lying on my back on a very clear night on a field somewhere and looking at the sky is enough for me, there's so much of this planet I haven't seen yet.

Also I bet being able to see things outside the planet would crush both your soul and your sense of scale.

That would have been the death of me. There is no way I would ever leave the house if such a thing existed.

I once went to a party in space. It was quite freaky.

No I don't want to go outside, I have to stay in, and marvel at the wonders of what's outside.

Great great stuff. It does remind me however of those posters and t-shirts I'd see at science museums that had the "You are arrow" pointing at some point in the galaxy.

Really makes ya feel insignificant comapred to the rest of the universe....well enough about that, let's go back to talking about Batman Begins' third act.

It's like a Moebius strip of fail.

I worship at the altar of Carl Sagan - I can't wait to see all the great stuff out there that would make anything here on Earth, no matter how wondrous and awe-inspiring (and there is a lot!), pale in comparison.

Crush your soul? Nay! I'd bet ALL our souls would soar in the face of the glorious unknown.

I will second the sight of a freckled girl's smile, though.

Wow.

I wonder how many years of travel it would take to be able to see such a thing for real?

Try Celestia, it's kinda like Google Galaxy and is very pretty and a lot of fun.
