Should HBO bring back Tales From The Crypt?

Revamp the series for a new generation? I own all the seasons released on DVD so far, and I haven't had this much enjoyment out of a Tv series since the Batman: The Animated Series set. The star turns were a hoot for the most part, and gave the series a relevance and authority that this genre usually lacks with a smaller medium like television. Hell, they were able to bring back Humphrey Bogart for an episode (thanks to Robert Zemeckis and ILM).

Any chance to see some horror that isn't confined by ratings and box office receipts, I'm all for. but, horror shows have a pretty poor track record so it's kind of a bitter sweet thing for me.

Tales from the Crypt did have some really great episodes though. I think my favorite, or at least the one I can always remember, is the one where William Sadler playes the executioner who goes and kills people when they have gotten away with murder. Simple story, but a lot of fun. The end of that episode is priceless...or so I remember it being.

I too loved Tales From The Crypt...even though now I can kinda see where almost every episode follows the exact same formula. How many times has the good guy died horribly in the second act, only to come back at the very end for zombie revenge? It's funny, because for all the tits and gore, the stories are very moralistic. Do bad things and even worse things will happen to you.

I always thought that the Crypt Keeper was fun, but for some reason the opening of the show always scares the shit out of me. That journey into the old house, ending with him popping out of the coffin with the green slime...I always changed the channel when I was a kid. It would be fun to see new episodes with new stars and directors, though. Anything would be better than these last couple "movies" they've put out (I will always stand behind Demon Knight, however).

Yeah, the opening montage is classic. Danny Elfman's theme song just makes it SOAR.

I'd totally watch new episodes. They wouldn't even have to be good. Which is lucky, cause they probably wouldn't be.

i also have 1-6 seasons of tales from the crypt and agree that they should bring some new ones to the table and bring back the crypt keeper with his bad puns.

they should also put out on DVD Friday the 13th series that was also a great show to watch.

I liked these a lot and would definitely be behind a revamp. They were even halfway good on network TV as reruns. It was so much fun to see one there first, then see it on HBO w/ all the gore left in.

Tales was a bit of entertaining fluff, but there were a lot of misses for every winning episode. Id still like to see yet another Twilight Zone revamp where they actually attempt to recreate the serious tone that many of the original series episodes had. One comedic episode for every 5 was about the right mix, and keep it to 30 minutes, as an hour long one always had way too much filler.

I never liked this show as much as I thought I should.
We already have Masters Of Horror. How about a series based on the EC crime comics instead?

Or the old "Weird Science" ones. Something different along the same lines would be a nice fresh approach.

I think they tried that already with disasterous results. Wasn't that the one with the "sexy" animated robot woman who's metal areola opened up to reveal the evening's episode?

Can someone get Hammer Films back up and running again? I'm still waiting for new episodes of Hammer House of Horror.

That'd be cool, but the budget for the inevitable effects a sci fi based series would have to have may be prohibitive (gore is, I imagine, cheaper than a lot of sci fi effects would be). I recall reading in a book about the Twilight Zone original series that Ray Bradbury had submitted several scripts that never got made because, while they were excellent stories that totally fit w/ the show, they would be to effect heavy (& therefore expensive) for them to produce. One can only wonder what might have been.

More "Freddy's Nightmares!" More "Freddy's Nightmares!"

I always wanted a weekly Creepshow anthology series. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. Whether it was securing the rights or simply a matter of disinterest, I always felt that someone dropped the ball by never having developed it for television. If HBO was going to invest in a new horror anthology, I think I'd prefer tuning into The Creep on a weekly basis rather than a rehashed Crypt Keeper.

Perhaps it would be some good competition against Master of Horror but I never really watched these shows.

Although I do remember that old John Carpenter show with Mark Hamil as the ballplayer with the eye transplant that came from a serial killer.

you do know that the HBO Crypt show already adapted some of the Crime/Shock Suspenstories?

also: Yes, they SHOULD bring it back. I miss John Kassir's voice/laugh.

That was the movie Body Bags.

I'd be afraid that if they brought it back, it would be totally lacking the ghoulish humor and high spirits that made the original so memorable and instead turn into Saw: The Series, especially with today's horror mentality.

True. And we also have the After dark Horrorfest . Part of the 8 films to die for.

I think Tales from the Crypt should rest in peace.

A little bit of the impetus behind Saw & its ilk might not be a bad thing. The original Tales were so heavily based on the old EC Comics (not that there's anything wrong w/ that, mind you) that they were somewhat repetetive & predictable. As has already ben mentioned, a lot of them involved a murdered hero coming back from the dead to seek vengeance on the villain that killed him. That's an EC staple. The Creepshow films kind of did a lot of that, too, but King made no bones about the fact that EC Comics were the inspiration behind the film. An occasional dip into a new perspective to update things a little for today's market - as long as it wasn't overdone - coupled w/ some stories that cleave to the old EC inspired style, maybe some J-Horror influence, etc. mixing things up a bit, might make for a worthy successor series.

am I the only one who never thought this show was all that? I thought it had a turd-to-gold ratio even worse than Tales From The Crypt
post #24 of 33
Did you mean tales from the Darkside?

I thought we were talking about tales from the Crypt?
whoops yeah "darkside"
Oh, OK. It was entirely possible it was me. . . .

Anyway, yeah, "Darkside" had some pretty crappy episodes. I can't even think of one I enjoyed. I'm sure there must've been one, because I watched the hell out if them, but I'll be damned if one occurs to me now.
For my money, there will always only be one "Are You Afraid of the Dark?".

Thank Christ for that.
You talkin' the movie w/ the little imp things terrorizing Sally, or was that an episode of one of the aforementioned series?
I'm talking bout the S'Nick classic featuring a veryy young Elishia Cuthbert and classic characters like Dr. Vink and Mr. Sardo.
Are You Afraid Of The Dark was a great Nick tv series. It was like Tales From The Crypt for kids. Even some of the stories didn't have happy endings, the one with the kid getting trapped in the pinball machine was one I remember.

On topic, I used to watch Tales From The Crypt edited on NBC when I was a kid, and I really need to get the show on dvd. I'd love it if HBO brought it back.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? also had a young Neve Campbell in one of the Dr. Vink episodes. I believe it was the one where he made soup out of people's fears. What's strange is that when I was about 8 or so, I would watch both Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Tales from the Crypt one after the other on Saturday nights. The first show was like a PG appetizer for the "turn it down so Mom and Dad don't know I'm watching it" main course of TFTC. And yet, I somehow found both shows alternately scary and hilarious.
Hmm. Never heard of 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?" But it sounds like something that would've been right up my alley.
I don't know if it would work to watch it now. I tried last year and even in full nostalgia mode I still needed a few beers to get through a disc of it.
