The creator of classic computer game "Doom," id Software, unveiled on Friday its eagerly anticipated next game, "Rage," in which players fight an oppressive government in a post-apocalyptic world.

The new game will be released for computers running either Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows or Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Macintosh operating system, as well as Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation 3 video game consoles.

Hands up everyone who flinches when the words "game" and "post-apocalyptic" are near each other.

I'll worship at the altar of Wasteland like everyone else, but I prefer the Children of Men sub-type to more Mad Max stuff ...

Wow, what an incredible announcement. Id unleashes a new game. What will it be, I wonder? A roleplaying game? A puzzle game? A cooking simulation? Whatever could they have up their sleeves?

Oh my god, it's a first-person shooter! Is there nothing these guys can't do? Just when you think it's only going to be another variation on Doom with prettier graphics, they come out of left field!

Way to stretch your creative horizons, Id, you glorious bastards.

Not really, though Fighting the government in a post apocalyptic world, makes me think the apocalypse in question had to be pretty lame.

I don't really care what ID is doing these days. When it comes to gameplay, they haven't innovated since Wolfenstein 3D. Sure their engines are pretty, but so are Unreal Engine 3, CryEngine 2 and the Lithengine. No one bothered to licence the Doom 3 engine and I'm guessing ID will have a hard time convincing developers to move back to using their tech.

My point exactly, only with less snark.

Here's my problem with Id:

They actually invented a game genre that took over the industry, which is a considerable feat, and would seem to indicate that there are some creative, innovative brains there someplace. But since that moment, they've been riding that same idea like an unconscious girl at a frat party. They've done nothing but build that same game over and over, with progressively more polygons, shaders and real-time light sources. It's boring.

If there's still a shred of creativity in those offices, then let's see them take a creative risk. Show us another idea. Games are a near-limitless canvas, and they've chosen to paint over the same image with a succession of finer brushes for over ten years. Let's move on.
Nevertheless, that engine looks amazing.
I'm not bothered by them making only FPS. I'm bothered by the fact their games suck. They look great but they are boring to play. Id Software haven't made a good game since Doom.
It actually doesnt sound all that limited to me, especially since theres supposed to be a strong focus on vehicles. Sure, it certainly doesnt bring something genuinely new to the table, but genuinely new and innovative doesnt sell these days.
Besides, some studios already fill that niche (Lionhead for ex.)
Innovation is a niche?

So, just how many action games are out there that allow you to drive around post-apocalyptic racetracks and then fight mutants and monsters FPS-style in between races? I can think of Redline off the top of my head; how about you guys?

Hopefully they'll allow you to tune and upgrade the vehicles.

See, I just do not view Id this way at all. Id is a workhorse, and exist for two reasons: advance the technology, and provide solid FPS games. Whatever that says about the company, that 'is' Id to me. They make FPS, it's just what they do.

It helps that I feel like the only real stumble they had (in terms of making a fun game) was the rushed-feeling Quake 4. Quake 3 was pretty great for its time (yes, I did like UT better) and I actually got a lot of enjoyment out of Doom 3.

Rage looks interesting. I'm not at all excited about vehicle stuff; I never am. But the world and character designs look good, and it'll probably be fun for a couple weeks, if I can upgrade my computer. Unless I'm too busy playing the new UT.

Couldn't find this thread in search, please delete my duplicate thread Alex.

This game looks fuckin sweet. Cartwheels?
I dig the little sentry bots.
So happy it isn't cel shaded!
HMMMM.

The car combat might be what pulls me toward this one, too.
The trailer just did nothing for me. It's like the industry hasn't really moved forward since Butcher Bay as far as visuals go, and that's a last gen game. All the characters look plastic, and the environments are bland. Part of why I'm looking forward to Borderlands is it bucks this trend with gusto.
From the trailer it seems like it will be a fun game and even though I'm looking forward to Borderlands I think there's room for more than a few post-apocalyptic mad max style shooters.
I dunno, i think this looks absolutely amazing. I really cant believe how a game that looks like that is able to play on consoles.
Anyone know if the driving sections can be done in first person? Seems silly to change to a third-person perspective for vehicles. This isn't a cart-racer.
I can't believe I'm interested in this after putting countless hours into Fallout 3 already. With Borderlands coming out soon, this is probably one wasteland game too many, but I think it looks amazing. I have no idea how this could be seen as bland or plastic-molded. It looks nearly a generation beyond Fallout's wasteland.
That color palette is really working for me. Mutants and wasteland are two words I'm not that excited to hear, although the development cycle for this apparently goes back a few years.

Driving influences from Burnout? Wow. And the uncompressed build supposedly fills a terabyte.
"A generation beyond"? Really? I mean it looks really good, but the geometry and textures are largely on the same level. The textures are just more varied. I'll give them that they picked much nicer looking sky though.
The animations of any characters moving in the trailer still looked really crappy though. And there was a brief shot with water pouring into a sink that looked like ass. If I had to pick a game to compare it to though, it seems like a bit like Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Maybe that's all it was--some trick of the lighting and colors, but I found it easily better looking than Fallout 3. If nothing else, it's well beyond Butcher Bay.

I like the 2007 posts that state that Id hadn't done anything innovative since Wolfenstein. I guess that's true if you don't count Doom or Quake, both of which were incredibly innovative. Doom was one of the first PC games (and the first FPS) that could be played over a LAN with a buddy. I'd argue that's as innovative as the first person perspective when you realize what it's led to.

Quake was ungodly fast and ungodly smooth. People who think it wasn't innovative weren't playing a lot of games at the time.

Anyway, like Alex states in the article I think Id deserves a little bit of slack as when they decide to invest time in a property it normally turns out pretty well.

Well, that's just nitpicking though since Doom and Quake came out such a long time ago.

I'm a big Fallout geek, and Rage demonstrates ably why Zenimax bought up id: they obviously have some hope for bringing these guys' technical ability to a franchise that, while wildly popular, is badly in need of it. Check out the mutant heads on the walls. The functional heft that the guns have in their recoil. Compare the sheriff in the Rage trailer to the sheriff in Megaton: one of these guys look like the awesome CG-talking head of Sheriff Green in Fallout 1's Big Town, and the other looks like a poorly rendered stiff.

I have great hopes that Bethesda will be forced to ditch the awful Gamebryo engine, adopt id Tech 5, and hire some fucking animators.

ALSO: the geometry in this game is a generation beyond Fallout 3. Easily. The ultra compressed textures are eye-popping, to be sure, but just compare a rock formation in some of these screen shots to some Fallout rocks. Maybe you have to be a geek to really appreciate it, but it is impressive.

Agreed! I would also say that story is one area that Id can definitely improve on and that's where the guys at Bethesda come in.

I gotta check this subforum more often. I swear I must've been in a coma for the last few months. I've had no idea just what kind of games were looming on the horizon.

As a post-apocalyptic junkie, I'll give anything in the genre a whirl and this seems pretty impressive. Leaves me optimistic, yet reserved. Been hoodwinked too many times.

As Zhukov said, the devilish details on display are a step up from Fallout and it'll be nice to have some more fluid animation at work. And chiming in with LeRolls, the narrative is going to have to really fly. Mindless shooters can be fun, no argument here. But my ability to let pretty graphics carry a shittily written game wore off fifteen seconds after I bought my first PS machine.

Hadn't heard about Borderlands either. And that looks fantastic. I'm not too partisan when it comes to cel shading vs photorealism. Heh, I'm probably the only fan of XIII for miles.

I really am just waiting until I can see any footage of it running on a console.
Small news, but ZeniMax just picked it up, so it's going to be published by Bethesda now. EA's not involved in sales or marketing anymore.
Interesting that EA doesn't think it's worth it.
Some of the marketing folks from EA I know were pretty heavily involved in all the website stuff, too.
After a few rounds of layoffs and more planned, it's not all that surprising that EA isn't taking a chance with a new property. It is weird that we haven't heard anything about this game in months.
Doesn't Bethesda or ZeniMax or whatever own id software now anyway?
Yeah, it would have just been sales and marketing, so it doesn't seem like a huge deal.
you are both missing the huge opportunity for RAGE puns what kind of internet journalists are you
post #42 of 123
they should just call it FFFFUUUUUU the game ammirite

(god, sorry about that. gonna go kill myself now.)

New article coming: EA RAPES Id's rawful RAGEface [rape fap rape] Bethesda
post #44 of 123
There you go. Now I feel like I'm on XBL.
If ever a game was made for Jake......
There still isn't a release date for this game is there? I doubt it'll be a terribly popular game but I'll probably pick it up anyway.
I think its supposed to come out in fall 2010, but I wouldn't surprised if it went into 2011. EA dropped the publishing rights to it not because they don't have faith in the game, but because Zenimax, the company that owns ID now, wanted the rights to their newly acquired companies game so they bought it out. It wasn't as if ID was hanging in the wind waiting for somebody to pick up Rage.
Figured I'd pop this back up to the top. I have this already pre-loaded thanks to Steam, just waiting for the release this week to start playing it. I love the footage I've seen of it, seems like a weird hybrid of Borderlands with the smooth play of Quake. Interesting looking weapons, a hopefully decent story line...I have high hopes.
Haven't enjoyed an ID campaign since Doom 2. Haven't enjoyed any of their multiplayer offerings since Quake 2. Think I'll wait till this is in the bargain bin.

Quake 3 is the best multiplayer game in the history of the universe. This is blasphemy.

I just wish publishers somehow figured out their international pricing. That way I could have bought Rage on Steam and be ready instead of waiting for our notoriously shitty retailers to bring it here.
